Hey /fit/, what's your opinion of the elliptical? Is it good cardio? I like it because it doesn't hurt my knees, but I can't shake the feeling that it's cheating. Is it?
I have trash knees from 9 years of football, to elaborate
Decent cardio for beginners or fatties who can't run on a treadmill.
As far as knee pain goes - I had BAD knee pain for about 2 months when I first started using the treadmill (I was about 215 lbs, so not super fat) but quickly developed my legs and the pain was minimized. Moving up always requires some pain but it's worth it - I burned a lot more fat after using the treadmill vs the elliptical.
tl;dr - Good for beginners but you should try to get on a treadmill eventually for best cardio results.

>45 minutes on elliptical
You should definitely be thinking about moving onto the treadmill soon. I stopped using the elliptical machine once I could go 30 minutes and only feel like I did moderate cardio. Start slow on the treadmill and keep your max to around 5 mph - maybe slightly more if you feel like you can do it.
At first 15 minutes on a treadmill felt like I did just as much if not more than 30 minutes on an elliptical. Now I usually do 20 to 30 minutes on a treadmill at 6.5 - 7 mph and I simply cannot go back. This paired with an intense leg day every week has given me incredible leg gains and an ability to keep weight off (ate like crazy during the holidays because of all the family and work get togethers and didn't gain any weight).
Good luck man.

My man.
I'm going back to football training soon which has like 4 hard running days a week so I'm hoping that that combined with counting calories should really cut some weight off.

There's no difference. If you get your heart rate up it doesn't matter how you do it.
