Depends on the terrain you're in, like you said yourself. Also the circumstances.

Grappling is great in 1v1, kicks are excellent in open ground. Grappling will beat boxing in a fight in a car if boxer doesn't knock out in first few strikes or sucker punches. Grappling arts often have strikes too.

This is what I used to think until I signed up for "boxing" classes. It was 4 days of cardio which included punching a heavy bag. Just learn how to punch and you can take care of yourself in a fight. Boxing the sport =/= punching in a street fight

If you're getting mugged, mugger either have weapon of some sort or there's 3 or more of them.
Other that that you might find someone who had a little too much drinks and wants to fight. However in this situation usually either you or him is with a group of friends.
