I lift because strength training significantly reduces the chances pic related will happen, or at-least get many more years without it. ...Proper strength training will achieve this; as in not putting on waaay too much weight like a lot of other bozos do. I work at a retirement community and I see every day how I'll end-up unless I get off my ass and do something about it. I also get to ask the therapists all the questions I want. The residents who are active don't use walkers or wheel chairs, even the ones in their 90s. They get around just as well as you or me and aren't senile (Very high mental capacity). The residents who aren't active are all like zombies. They're slow as fuck and can hardly get up to the toilet on their own. Often, the lights are on but no one is home, or they're on their way out the door (low mental capacity). The residents who use walkers (I dunno about wheelchairs) were able to ditch them after they started working out.

Strength training makes you more resistant to injury; if you do get injured, you usually recover faster.
