You misunderstand the proper use of a spotter. Yes it is for safety, which the Smith Machine already provides easy racking, but a spotter is there to test the will of their partner. If they're struggling to make that last rep, a good spotter encourages them to push past the point of pain and aid them by receiving a couple pounds of pressure. Buddeh.
