My dad says he wants to start lifting to conserve his muscles and bones in old age. He's 58, and has never lifted before. I know that older guys can do heavy lifting, but can't do as many reps and sets, but what kind of program should I get him on? It should presumably be something like Starting Strength without the Power Cleans, as older people's tendons can't handle explosive movements
tell him he's a manlet and will never make it

StrongLifts, but instead of 5x5 straight across have him do ramping sets.

So it would look like this for squats
Day 1
45-45-45-45-45
Day 2
45-45-45-45-50
Day 3
45-45-45-50-55
Day 4
45-45-50-55-60
Day 5
45-50-55-60-65

how about, well, starting strength without the power cleans?
find a personal trainer and consult a physician for a full checkup before u start.

Happy that your dad is lifting. No matter the age he can still accomplish goals he sets for himself

Just do SS, but perhaps with slower progression and take out the cleans, or lighten them significantly
