How can I improve my grip? I've already switched to using mixed grip but my overhand grip is failing me.

Get chalk and keep progressing normally. During your sets, doubleoverhand until it fails and then go to mixed. This way by the time you can 1rm 405 mixed you can probably overhand 315+. Those are strong forearms; why is it important for your overhand grip to be close to 1rm?

Why is what? The hard part of deadlifting is picking it up do to the angle. It's about leverage. You're probably fat. Lose weight and try it again, see if it works the same.
