For me, my mentality has always been that not going to the gym was not a choice. I don't feel like going a lot of days, but I just go because I have to and I feel a lot better for it. If I ever do feel really shitty and miss a day, I just go on one of my off days instead.
Not eating like shit is a lot harder though. I love going out to eat and I love shitty food. I've been able to at least maintain my weight though.
