My brother has a cat, and while I normally can't stand cats, she's a serious bro. Funnily enough he didn't even want a cat, but his ex's old cat had died and they got it for her. Then she slept around and left him a few months after without warning. Months after that she asked for the cat back after leaving it with my brother with no warning, so he told her to get fucked and kept it. I'm glad he did, it's a cool cat. Doesn't like women, but she's a real pleasure to be around and is the only cat I have never been worried about having a bitch fit and scratching or biting me. I even kiss her head every time I visit, which I would never do with any other cat. She's loving and cute and nice.

That being said, pretty much any other pet aside from birds would be better than a cat in my opinion. Dogs, reptiles, amphibians, even fish. My brother just lucked out really.

But I think judging someone based off their pet choice is retarded. It's just a fucking pet. You should be secure enough in your masculinity to confidently own whatever pet appeals to you instead of using a pet as some sort of visual affirmation of your manhood. No it's not. A huge part of a pet's behavior is going to be based off of its species and breed. The species has a huge effect because of evolution, and the breed has a large effect because we select for certain traits through breeding. An owners behavior around an animal and their training and treatment of it is also a large part of what determines a pet's behavior, but it's not all nurture.

My first dog was heavily abused and hurt by loud, cruel owners before my family got him. By your logic the dog should have been sketchy and mean, but it was lively and loving from day one despite its horrid treatment a few weeks before he got returned to the shelter. Same goes for the rest of my pets, most of which have either been lab animals or rescues. If what you said was true then there should have been a transitory period where the pets regarded me with negativity and even violence, but that never happened despite me owning over a dozen different species of pets over my life.

Humans found ways to evolve them to do every kind of menial servant task possible. Retrieving, rat catching, bird dogging, fighting, and they were conditioned to prioritize these tasks with most of their being.

I have two dogs, one is a retriever and the other isn't. The retriever was never taught, but literally lives to fetch. The other dog doesn't even have a concept of the game. We have bred personality into them. Any extra stuff, whether you abuse or take care of your dogs, will effect their demeanor, but it isn't going to change their core proclivities.

Cats are simply independent creatures. We never figured out a way to breed them to be useful because the independence is deeply rooted into their nature as lone predators. The teamwork, loyalty thing, is just not there.

My second dog was a hound and a bird dog. She chases birds constantly, while the herd dog would let birds walk in front of him and do nothing. She also sniffs everything to a comical degree. When I come visit my mom, the hound will sniff my legs for a couple minutes straight. She I walk her, she'll trip over her ears and leash constantly or bump into things because her nose is glued to the ground from the moment we leave the house. It's just what she does. The other dog sniffed, but just a bit and just when something was interesting. To the hound, everything is interesting to her nose.

Dogs are, on the whole, more useful to humanity. Hunters, herders, guardians, and laborers. They're Man's Best Friend for a reason, and our relationship with Canis lupis familiaris is many, many times older than civilization.

Cats have their own, extremely important, role to play: they are absurdly enthusiastic vermin killers. Vermin that can easily eat half or more of your harvest and spread disease. Countless famines have happened because of out of control vermin, and part of the reason the Black Death was murderous was because it was fashionable at the time to kill cats, the devilish familiars of witches, and the rodent population subsequently exploded. Cats are arguably necessary for a civilization of decent size.

It's a shame we haven't developed a mutualistic relationship with mosquito eaters.

Sure, a dog will protect his territory (your home) with it's life and will love you unconditionally, but having too little time to give attention and care will be pretty detrimental to it's health.
A cat on the other hand wont give a fuck about who is stealing your stuff as long as it's not his stuff and there will be days where it'll ignore you completely, but it'll show you love with gestures that you may have to google to understand.
