is 5 reps x 5 sets of very heavy weights good for building muscle and strength? if not then whats good for strength building and muscle building at the same time?
1 long set until failure.
I always thought 5x5s were for lower-weight settings to improve/perfect form
I always start new lifts with them and then swap to a 3x10 or drop set when I rotate it in as a main lift

Mix it up, esp. if you're benching/squatting twice a week. Do heavy triples one day, then 5-8 reps the next session.
Hypertrophy range is between 85% and 70% . 5rm is the limit. U grow but at the same time u become stronger.

If you are natural 5x5 is all you need.
3x5 compounds, 3x8-12 isolation
how many reps is too much?
if could pull 10x5 should I up weight?

For beginners, yes. If you want to build muscle and strength, you have to have a good amount if variation. Say you go to bench and want to build strength, you should do 8x3 (for example) and you'll build strength, then you go do some dumbbell presses for 3 or 4 sets of 8-10 or flyes for a similar rep range. You need to be consistent while keeping variation.

Why do isolation? With 5x5 you hit everything and you are done in 45 min so you can do other things.

For a quick 2 month cut (want to drop 6-8 lbs after a long bulk), /fit/ suggested I do everything with heavier weights and go to 5x5 instead of 3x8.
Thoughts on that?

Ramp up and drop back down for volume or lower the weight and rest time as well. Do a weight you can explode up and hold on the way down.

Unless you've been lifting for < 6 months that's not nearly enough volume
I quite like the Wendler BBB method of doing your heavy sets, maybe 3x3 at 90%, and then 5 x 10 at 50-60%. Breaks you, but accumulates good volume.
