I don't come here often, but I need real advice. I'm currently 18 and I'll be leaving for Army basic in June. I've always been the indoors type but I'm excited about joining up, I passed all the physical tests until this point, and I'm at a good bmi, but the Army requires a minimum 8 minute mile just to get into basic, and my best mile is just below 10 minutes. I'm terrible at running. I can't run more than a quarter mile without a huge heart rate spike, leg pains, and lightheadedness. It's not general unfitness, I can lift and swim fine, but specifically when running I get a huge amount of pain. What am I doing wrong? Is it form? Some kind of disease?

first point, go to a running store and buy shoes. Not a sporting goods store, a running store. if they're good, they'll have someone analyze your gait on a treadmill and measure your foot and recommend a shoe that actually fits.

second point, fix your form. while you're at the running store you might be able to get pointers. start talking to people you know who run. ask your high school's cross country coach. it sounds like form is your issue.

third, stretch stretch stretch. every time after you run. make sure to target your hips, hammies and calves. buy a foam roller if you don't have one.

fourth, couch25k. google it, its a running program.
