Hey, /fit/. I just got a gym membership, but it's just an express membership as I can't afford the full one. The express gym doesn't have a regular squat rack, it's a Smith Machine. I've heard these are terrible for squatting, and with SS I'm not sure what I can replace barbell squats with. Any recommendations?
you can squat in the smith machine, they're less effective than 'real' squats but people exaggerate how bad they are. Just don't go heavy all at once and make sure you go nice and deep you have no excuse not to... OR, start off squatting with dumbbells. Goblet squats are aight.

better than nothing, mate
do what you can with what you have. google "full depth squats smith machine" youll find info on how to get a good range of motion.
The bar moves in a specific direction so make sure your form is right otherwise it'll land in an awkward position. I started at PF with their smith machines and saw results, but I had to go ass to grass to get much more than I would out of the leg press.

Something else. I've heard that SS actually gets you fat from a few different places. I probably don't need to worry about that, since I'm a skeleton at 126 lbs and I'm 5'10". Anyway, is there any truth to that? Is there a better program for a weightlifting noob?
