during late novice stage - squat 3x5 heavy twice a week with a recovery day in between those sessions, on that day do the deadlift

at a certain point during SS/SL it gets ridiculous trying to squat and dl heavy on the same day, Rip's programming book has good info on how to adapt training when that time comes

as of now - volume day tuesday, light recovery thursday, and new 5RM PR saturdays (madcow/TM for intermediate-advanced)

You'll live if you split squat and deadlifts on different days and do some accessories but without roids you're far better off with twice a week.
