Alright /fit/ let's get this straight. What is better for developing lats? Heavy pulldowns or weighted pull ups?
Why?
Both
if I could only do one, lats would be so fucking boring
if dont work them, no grow

I remember pissing some military guy off at the gym when I told him pulldowns are like smith machine squats and proceeded to give him shit about how free weight squatting/pullups are probably too hard for him.
weighted chins.
lats are best built with the arms in the front of the body, not to the side, for a larger range of motion.
if you can add enough weight, then the bonus strength your biceps provide in chin ups is nullified, and the movement is identical to a weighted pull up but with larger range of motion.
anyone who disagrees is a philistine.

pulldowns with your arms just outside shoulder width

I'm a dyel but I need to throw a 45 between my legs to do pull ups (x8). I don't do many chin ups tho... should I switch it up?

Just going by personal experience, but I used to do pull downs and recently I've started doing pullups, not even weighted, and my back has taken off size wise. Maybe it isn't the pullups as I also started mixing in some sets of high rep rows after not doing many high rep sets, but I still feel like I worked harder after pull ups.

Switch it up for a while and see for yourself if I'm right. If it sounds dubious, mix them in 50-50 with pull ups. The movements are fundamentally similar, so you don't have too much to lose if pull ups end up being better for you.

pull-ups are great, but I think you'll get pretty good results in just about anything from just adding in movements you weren't doing before
Chin ups. Only dyels do pull downs.
