So what would happen if I just started a daily running routine? What could a mildly overweight person expect from just running everyday and progressively running longer distances as I get better?
if you cut out junk food, soda, juice etc. you might slowly lose weight

Can confirm. I cut out all junk and walked almost everyday and lost 50kg since nov 2014. Slow but sustainable. Still 100kg but I'm getting there.
Lost 30 pounds in the course of 4 months from cutting out all junk, drinking only water, and running. Protien shakes for bfast help alot too.

A steady progression of running, with consistency, will make you a better runner and burn a decent amount of calories. If you're looking to lose weight, diet is a whole other ball game, but a steady increase in running is never a bad thing.
Shin splits and possibly knee pain, because you're both overweight and probably don't know how to run correctly. Cut your calories back and start a daily walking routine first. After you lose some weight and know the proper form, then you can start jogging, and then you can start running.
To lose weight, you need a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Lifting several days a week will have almost as much impact on weight loss as running several days a week.
Running isn't for losing weight, but for building cardio endurance. But your heart is a muscle, and you should train it like any other muscle.
