Aim for a couple of inches behind the thing you want to hit. Don't hit at him, hit though him.

Pull your hand back to your neck with your forearm in a neutral position, with your opposite leg in front, thrust it forwards level with your neck while twisting so your palm faces down and twisting your hips and back slightly.
