Main function of the rhomboids is downward rotation of the scapulae. Vertical pulling has downward rotation and retraction (both main functions) for the longest range of motion, while rows don't really involve rotation, merely retraction.
Which means vertical pulling is better for the rhomboids.

It's also better on a variety of other things, including range of motiion for the lats and elbow flexors.

Rows are superior on a few aspects, like more rear delt involvement in general and strengthening spinal erectors.

Do deadlifts from boxes from that height and paused deadlifts at your weak point.

Hammer the volume until your hip muscles get stronger.
>>
>>39430052
What if my weak point is off the floor? And what if I literally fucked my back deadlifting to knees?
>>
>>39430052

I'd do that, but there's only 3.5 weeks till nationals.

This is shit. I'm starting to hate deadlifts. My squat is literally only 5kg away from my deadlift.
>>
>>39430044You guys told me the only thing that mattered was a big total!
>>
>>39430063

Deficit deadlifts and paused deadlifts, pausing right after the bar leaves the floor.

And don't train touch and go.

Be careful with your back though.

>>39430067

Well, you don't have a lot of time to improve it now, but you can improve it for the next meet.

Are you pulling sumo or conventional? How strong is your back and grip?
>>
>>39430067
Ok. Calm down. What are you pulling at the moment? Are you making sure you are leaning back as it comes past the knee? It'll make the movement smoother and seem more inevitable as you thrust forward. Start pulling hard and try get out of your head. You need to get into the right frame of mind before you compete. You can do it.
>>
>>39430099
Conventional. I get injured every time I do anything sumo.

Grip is good enough, I can hold 320kg for a few seconds.

Back I think is also pretty decent, I can do sets of 120kg rows, or t-bar rows.

>>39430127
230kg is max, I've done 245 to my knees though in an attempt before. Not really leaning back halfway, but there's no real chance to do so. Every time I get to deadlifting that heavy my mind just goes blank af.
>>
>>39430156
I get that. Got to 4th rep yesterday and everything just fucking left me. Sounds like you're spooked.

I have a good friend who uses a bit of ammonia before heavy deads. You tried that before? Could be a good quick fix for on the day if you're having a mindset problem. Just keep standing up.
>>
>>39430193
Even tried it today. No go. In june, I dropped my heaviest set. In September, I dropped my heaviest set, today, I dropped it.

Every fucking time.

>>
>>39430215
If it's happened over and over you're bound to feel like it's going to happen again.

Next time notice that it has slowed but stay completely focused on standing up. Just stay with it, maintain position, squeeze your glutes force your brace and fuck that bar. Get some metal in your ears as well.
>>
>>39430253
Tried 235, 240, 245 at different times. All shoot up to the knees.

>>39430286
Bruh, the music is the least of my concern.
>>
>>39430292
Breh literally just keep pulling. If stimulants aren't your issue, you, unironically, need to try harder.
>>
>>39430253
Yeah this as well. Your body is not a PR machine when you tell it it a number and it picks it up.
>>
>>39430295
Yup. I think I'm going to write down a list of things to focus on in 3.5 weeks. Literally tell myself to keep pulling whatever happens at Nats.
>>
>>39430292
No seriously it will make you try harder. You are giving up the ghost. You are being clouded by the fear.

Fucking keep going. It's the same as when your bench slows down, you complete the rep by keeping moving. As soon as it slows you get everything you can to keep it going. You brace harder, you push harder YOU DONT FUCKING STOP.

Eddie Hall got his 500kg partly because thousands of people were yelling telling him to do it. Mindset is everything. You can do.

well honestly if your 3rd attempt is more than 240, and i even think thats a bit high, im going to slap your shit son, and seeing as how youve never lifted more than 230 that should be the max for 2nd attempt if not lower

a total to build on is better than a 'likely going to fail this' pr imo

If you're not gonna do the DLs from boxes for lack of box , you should incorporate RDLs and RDLs from the knees (1 from the floor + X from the knees up) or SLDL (I'm not the biggest fan of this one but it also works).

Basically, strengthen your hip extensors.

The one I train with? It's my own WL routine.
Basically I use myself as guinea pig to see what works when it comes to WL. I sometimes try different, weird stuff just to see if it sticks.

Not the best routine ofc, but I had to use something personalised for myself anyways because of being on test blockers.

It's based off of Takano's programs though.

Vertical pulling involves less retraction.

Retraction can actually move the weight through a small range of motion, but downward rotation just puts the scapulae in the correct position while the lats extend and adduct the shoulders.

I haven't seen any EMG studies comparing vertical and horizontal pulls for the rhomboids, but I wouldn't be surprised if rows would outperform pull-ups.

Retraction has a short range of motion and is also done by other muscles (including the traps).

The downward rotation has a long range of motion and is exclusively done by the rhomboids (the other two that also participate don't perform the same role).

EMG studies aren't accurate.

Everything points to vertical pulling being a better exercise for the rhomboids Tbh.

But really, rows or pullups, who cares about which is "best". It's just an accessory anyways. And rhomboids are a meme

>The downward rotation has a long range of motion and is exclusively done by the rhomboids (the other two that also participate don't perform the same role).
Neither of this matters for what I said.
Retraction is loaded (in rows), downward rotation isn't (in chins/pullups).
Any loaded movement is gonna be way harder on the muscles than any non-loaded movement, regardless of range of motion.

>EMG isn't accurate meme
Stop this myth.
EMG has its limitation, but disregarding it outright is ignorant.

>Everything points to vertical pulling being a better exercise for the rhomboids Tbh.
No, some things do, while some do not.

>But really, rows or pullups, who cares about which is "best".
Exactly. So instead of being adamant that vertical pulling is best for the rhomboids, be honest and say that both vertical and horizontal pulling make use of the rhomboids, but you don't know which is better.

It is though. Your body weighs, and you can add weight as well.

>Stop this myth.

It's not a myth, it's truth. EMG studies are not accurate.
I didn't say it's not useful. But people overuse it.

EMG comes last in the line of what's important when looking at biomechanics Imo.

>So instead of being adamant that vertical pulling is best for the rhomboids, be honest

100% honest?
It's better because it involves both retraction and downward rotation through the complete range of motion.

Stronglifts till 2.5 plate squat,3 plate dl and 2 plate bench.
2 candito cycles that I stalled out on mid 3rd cycle.
Switched to Madcow and that raised it alot, but I stalled on that for 2 months.
Now Im just fucking around doing pause squats, front squats, box squats.
I don't know how to go forward.
I was thinking of trying smolov out, but figured that I couldn't currently be able to do it, due to inability to shove myself with food (time and financial restriction). Not approaching it with right mindset would also be wrong.
Maybe texas method?

Once again, no, downward rotation isn't loaded.
Shoulder adduction and extension is done by the lats, which are loaded.
The downward rotators just stabilise the scapulae.

In rows, the retractor can move the actual weight without involvement of the lats (eventhough the lats obviously help too).

EMG is used to confirm 3D biomechanical analysis.
It's a way to see if a model corresponds with practice.
A full 3D biomechanical analysis that takes muscle forces, moment arms, etc, into account says more than a simple EMG study, yes.
That's not what you provided though.

Cool. So say you *think* (or *suspect*) vertical pulling is better because it involves downward rotation (and a little bit of retraction).
Don't go around asserting things you can't be sure about.
>>
>>39431276
rhomboids ARE a meme which is why I wasn't arguing "horizontal pulling is better for rhomboids"

I was arguing "horizontal pulling is better"

Specifically I think it's better assistance for a powerlifter who is doing a lot of benching and wants to keep his shoulders healthy, have some semblance of anterior/posterior delt balance etc

>>
>>39431389
By the way, I think that's a part of why people dislike you on /fit/.
You use a lot of technical sounding words, while making a lot of hard statements that you can't really back up.

People wouldn't complain as much if you just were honest and critical of yourself, used phrasing like "I think", and wouldn't make hard statements like "X is definitely better".

Yeah, good one.
Try not being a fucking dick instead of calling anyway that comes back with arguments "stubborn".

Just that you called others autistic.

I'm not that chill, mate.
You've obviously put a lot of time into researching kinesiology and strength and hypertrophy training.
And you obviously put a lot of time trying to help people on /fit/.
And yet you feel the need to be correct on everything, and won't try to be more aware of your own limitations.

I've seen the same thing with Esmeralda.
Eventhough she's less knowledgeable than you, she'd also make a lot of statements as if they were truth.
A while back I called her out on it, and she gave it some thought and improved herself.
There's nothing wrong with that.

I can gain weight no problem but,
No matter how much I eat the proportion of weight that goes to my legs and to my upper body always remains the same.
I won't lift for approval, but I also won't lift to be made fun of.

Maybe because you half repped 255 lbs with bouncy-ball plates 20 times.

Try a real weight through a real range of motion, and let the bar come to rest between reps, cupcake.

If Lith wanted me to do deficit conventional paused deadlifts with calibrated plates for 20 reps in IPF approved gear using 90% of my floor 1RM in front of 3 IPF judges he would of said so
>>
>>39433480

I imagine the word "deadlift" was actually used, which means DEAD on the floor.

My hamstrings are easily the weakest part of my body, you think leg curls might help with that? After 2x8 sumo today I did 3x8 Romanian deadlifts and I felt it less in my hammies than I felt from the sumo.
>>
>>39433480
I'm gonna do Lith's little challenge in two weeks. Should be fun.

>>39433510
You sure you're doing it right? I don't feel sumo in my hamstrings at all unless I'm about to cramp up, and Romanians absolutely wreck my hamstrings. Leg curls could help but they're not going to train the hip extension function of them, only the knee flexion.
>>
>>39433480
>out of competition
Imagine someone doing 20 reps in comp though

>>
>>39433615
My sumo form is pretty good, I feel it only on the lockout past the knees. I think my Romanian form was good too but I didn't go that heavy (just 2 plates, this is my second time doing em). My hamstrings are insanely weak though, if I try to use them when I run they start to burn, so I have my own modified running gait that uses em less lol
>>
>>39433642
You pushing your hips back a bunch on the Romanians? And how low are you going? Recording yourself would be good. Also, focus on using them more when you run, the more you use them the more they'll grow and make it easier.

Ok, I'll record next time. I try to push my hips back and I go a few inches below my knee. I think it's just cause I went light, honestly, I did feel a stretch tho.

And I'll try using them during my runs, thing is they start burning after 30 fucking meters kek. Just gotta try harder I guess, can't let myself turn into a Lith
>>
Fueled by failing the shit out Lith's 20 rep deadlift thing i decided to amrap 405 to rub it in his face. Could only pull it once. Im a bitch today. Shame me. Im BTFO
