>still using iron for weights
I don't get it. When lifting big, we need to use massive iron weights which take up a lot of room in the gym, making it a hassle for everybody. Why don't they make weights out of osmium? It is the heaviest safe metal on the periodic table, so I don't see why not. They would be smaller (due to high density), safer, and more compact; the gym would be able to buy more of them since they won't take up so much room.

Why not?
>>
>>39307124
And how much does 25kg of osmium cost?
>>
>>39307124
How easy is osmium to forge and make weights out of compared to vinyl or iron?

How more compact would osmium weights be?

lets take a look

Density : 22.59 g/cm3

lets asume a disk 25cm in diamtere and 4 cm in width. (about a standard big disk for a dumbell)

its volume is 12.5x12.5x3.14x4cm=1962cm3

that gives us about 44321grams. or about 44kg

now lets weight the bar, if it has a diameter of 4 and a lenght of 25cm it would weight 7kg

so all in all you would have a 100kg dumbell of about the same size of an iron 10kg one. And it will cost 1.3 million dollars
I know op is retarded in his lack of understanding of basic physics, but he has a fair point, as long as you think of it as a toy for rich people rather than something for mass use.

Also, another question, what if in a hypothetical far away future we saw a reduction in the cost of osmium because of asteroid mining?
>>
>>39307280
well its impossible to weigh a kilo of feathers without it going everywhere

>>
I'm actually working on this.
You can find 180kg (lmao4plt) of Osmium in 1 million metric tons of earth.
I could sell that shit for about 5.5 million dollars.
One excavator could do the job in about 25 years.
All I need is to pick the osmium out of the earth and forge the weights and bar.
Probably gonna get some gypsies to help me out.
>>
>>39310523
>Iron is the cheapest by weight.
Water is probably the cheapest thing by weight.

Iron is the cheapest thing that is durable and relatively easy to make into weights.
If you're poor, you can make huge gains with some sand, a couple of heavy duty sandbags, some nylon straps, a random iron pipe with some holes drilled in it and a platform to have decent rom despite the large bags. Or just use metal buckets filled with sand.

There is no greater evil in this world than objects that are made out of ceramic and metal. It is no coincidence that these objects arose out of the worst period of Earth's history: the past 100,000 years. These demonic creations are capable of producing sounds so distasteful that they rattle me to the bone and shake the very foundation upon which my nervous system lies.

It is impossible to even break these horrid things without being hurt by the sounds that they make. They can only be carefully buried and hopefully never dug up again.

The only thing that even approaches this evil are homes made out of wood and carpeted floors. These are the only things that are nearly as distasteful and undesirable as objects made out of metal and ceramic.

The most common compound exhibiting the +8 oxidation state is osmium tetroxide. This toxic compound is formed when powdered osmium is exposed to air. It is a very volatile, water-soluble, pale yellow, crystalline solid with a strong smell. With other words, roided sweaty gym rats would get blown the fuck out, not saying its a bad thing tho.

Except any place with that kind of deposit is also home to other platinum group elements, which means that property is probably already gripped up by someone else

>A kg of osmium is about 30lbs
What the fuck
>>
>>39314561
I used the average abundance of Osmium in the earths crust. So I should be fine just starting to dig wherever, if I used a place with rich deposits I could be done much sooner but those places are probably taken as you've said.
>>
>>39312798
you'll obviously still lift dumbbells of the same weight, they'll just be smaller. So it's the same weight that would fall on your foot
>>
>>39315519
> the same weight that would fall on your foot.
True, but it would be concentrated in a 10 times smaller area - so the force of the impact would be 10 times more concentrated ie. the pressure would be much higher.

When you're jabbing someone with a knife and hitting them, you use the same amount of force - but one causes a bruise, the other penetrates deep. Same principle.

Fuck mane have a /you/
>>
>>39315206
That's not how ore deposits work, though
>>
How large would lead with say a 1 inch rubber coating be?
>>
>>39315842
Yeah, if it's very abundant in certain rich areas then the average abundance in a random spot is probably much lower. But hey, even if it takes me 50 years that's a doctors salary over the years.

I was just reading up on these. I was looking at the U90 Stage 3 set. Am I correct in assuming Stage 3 includes Stage 1 and 2? Not sure if I have to buy Stage 1 and get the 2 and 3 upgrades, or if Stage 3 already includes 1 and 2.
>>
>>39316016
Consdieidng it averages 50 parts per trillion, and it's pretty much non-existant outside of areas that have already been looked at by companies, and that even super small-scale mining requires a lot of more than just a a backhoe, and that you'd need to to do you own mineral processing, I'mma tell you that your idea is bad
>>
>>39317170
is this one of the adjustable weight dumbells? how does it work? you just add or remove plates, right?
>>
>>39318229
Nice try, osmium lobby.
You'll have to kill me if you want to keep your monopoly.
>>
>>39318294
It seems so. Not that guy, so I'm trying to figure it out.
I guess each plate adds a certain amount of weight? That's pretty ingenious. I still prefer the typical dumb-bells, but something like the PowerBlock would be ideal for the home gym, provided the balance and whatnot wasn't too thrown off.

the difference in height is negligible
the earth radius 6,371 km
the highest mountain is about 4km...

that means that the WORST difference in weight you can have is 0.0004%

i reaaaally hope youre trolling
>>
>>39310644
Why don't they make weights out of iron filled with water?

They could even give it a tap incase you want to increase the weight and squish as much water as you want in there
>>
>>39318294
You turn it and it turns down the weight. It's really dangerous though because you can't tell the weight by size so 90 pounds looks like 5 pounds. The only way to tell weight is by reading the weight. Plus it's got a lot of recalls because you can turn up the weight in mid air if you twist too hard.

>tfw doing 5 pound lat raises and they go up to 90 pounds

Fractional plates would be like thin rings you'd wear on your fingers

Little hand weights like chick magazines always show would be real weight.
