remember folks, slow and steady wins the race

So is this why Jeb Bush will win the presidential election?
the universe is making mad gains
>>39290873
Actually, space is expanding in an accelerating rate. Eventually accelerating to a point where matter will lose it's cohesion. Not to mention that space made most of it's gains during it's inflation period if the early universe.

Speaking of Tyson, did you guys know he wrestled in highschool and almost became a male stripper?
A black wrestling astrophysicists male stripper. Damn

That said, you're wrong.
Empty space is expanding with a constant expansion rate, meaning more space = more expansion, which has the effect of an increasingly expanding universe. However, the positive pressure of gravity is much higher than negative pressure caused by "dark energy," and as such gravitationally bound systems do not expand as they are pulled back together.
The forces that keep matter together at the quantum level are much stronger than gravity, so the expansion is even more irrelevant at that scale.

To elaborate, this means non-gravitationally bound systems will eventually be so far apart that they are beyond the observable universe, and the empty space between them will be expanding so rapidly that no information (light, for example) will ever make it between them. So, in trillions of years, our local cluster of galaxies will be a massive amalgam galaxy, and the night sky beyond that lump of mass will be forever pitch black.

I thought this depended on the universe's total density, and that a big crunch or heat death were both possibilities? Or has someone over the past few years definitively proven that the expansion will never come back down?

We're at the point evidence-wise that the big crunch, while still a possibility of course, is MUCH less likely than infinite expansion/heat death. For clarification, infinite expansion has the end result of heat death as stars die and energy is dissipated as we know it does.
