Is barbell training really the best way to gain the most strength possible? I know that Rippetoe says that dumbbell bench press is actually better for strength than a barbell but tells people to use barbells to fit powerlifting standards and I'm wondering if this is the case for other lifts as well. Also, does a routine like Starting Strength really build as much strength possible in every muscle? Is it possible to maximize strength gains in every muscle or do you need to specialize? I just want to be as strong as possible for holding my girlfriend and day to day activities like that, I don't really care about powerlifting or inflating my numbers.

Dumbbell overhead press, dumbbell one arm row, and dumbbell incline/decline/flat bench will build more strength in the TARGET muscles than their barbell counterparts. This is simply due to the same reason barbells are better than machines - the stabilization factor and freedom of movement.

Barbells will build stronger spinal erectors and legs in exercises that you could never load properly with a dumbbell.

Examples:
>deadlifts and variants (sumo, RDL, rack pull, behind the back, jefferson, deficit, snatch grip etc)
>squats and variants (front, zercher, hack, bulgarian split, box, etc)
>rows with a barbell aren't as good as dumbbell rows for upper back or lats, but will hit your spinal erectors harder this includes pendlay rows and conventional.
>any Olympic lifts or variants, besides clean and PRESS regarding shoulder development (old school, not done anymore so it doesn't matter.

side note: weighted dips are arguably better than any bench variation besides incline, which hits upper chest like no other.

weighted pull ups cannot be replicated to equal effect, same goes for barbell/trap bar deadlift.
>>
>>39122195
>side note: weighted dips are arguably better than any bench variation besides incline, which hits upper chest like no other
Can attest to this. Am lanklet, been struggling with bench for ages. After starting weighted dips go to 2pl8 bench ezbreezy
>>
Dumbells are better if you can get them into position easily enough.

You need helpers when you get real strong for dumbell bench really. Kicking 50kg dbs off your knees into position uses quite a lot of energy.

Barbells are just easier to load and get into position which is why they provide a great balance between function and ease of use.

I laugh when people think barbell automatically = superior tho. BB rows for example, are quite far down the list of best rowing variations for back strength and growth.
>>
>>39122195
Dips are really heavy on the shoulder though, I wouldn't recommend them if you have any shoulder issues.
>>
>>39122228
This is true. Another reason weighted dips are king of horizontal push (especially leaning forward on rings or other suspended straps).

But as far as rowing and overhead pressing goes dumbbells are king. If you're strong enough to overhead press a single 150 lbs dumbbell for example, you can for sure clean it to position with two hands. If you can dumbbell row a 200 lbs dumbbell, then picking it up to position will be no problem.
>>
>>39122249
Leaning forward and attaching the rings/suspension straps about 4 feet apart from each other helps a lot with this. Puts much more tension on pectorals rather than deltoids and relating ligaments.
>>
ITT: phaggots that fell for the dumbbell meme hoyl shit what a bunch of dyel cucks

>>39122249
my shoulders can handle weighted dip but my elbows cannot
>>
>>39122249
Problem with dips as well is loading them in any sensible way for novices. Most sedentary people will struggle to do even a couple body weight dips till their bench is decent.

If memory serves, Rip has said before that bench is to dips/push ups what lay pull downs are to chin ups. However chins are generally much easier even for relatively weak people to do.

>>
compared to barbell, dumbbell overhead press doesn't make my should crack and dumbbell row doesn't hurt my wrist so that's cool
>>

>>
>>39121510
Rip says that absolute beginners should use barbell bench press because it's easier to learn and do than dumbbell bench press. Rip is not coaching powerlifting, SS is not about powerlifting, PP is not about powerlifting, Rip's prescribed form is not optimal for powerlifting, SS is about beginners gaining most strength possible.

Bench in any form should be abandoned once 250 lbs is able to be pressed due to the scapulas being pinned under the body and the weight during movement.

Look man just stop embarrassing yourself by telling people you only OHP 75kg and being proud of it. Instead of providing an argument for why barbell pressing is superior to dumbbell pressing you come in here with anecdotal evidence of you pressing a novice weight thanks to the wonders of barbell training. For the record I train with barbells exclusively because I'm at an oly lifting gym and one I would look like a faggot if I went to the dumbbell rack and two it has better transfer to what I'm trying to achieve. You should be mildly satisfied with what you've achieved so far but you're not strong and won't be for years so just keep humble and keep working at it, be open to other methods and actually listen to their potential merits

But if you want strength that actually translates to being able to put heavy shit over your head irl, where sometimes you only have room for one hand, or things aren't perfectly balanced like a barbell, or you want to be EQUALLY strong with either arm, then use dumbbells. Or don't idgaf.

I'm sure we all know that F = ma, so there is no force associated with a mass without an acceleration. So 20 kg in the absence of a gravitational field accelerating it (or something else accelerating it) doesn't have a force acting upon it.

That's why in outer space, your 200 kg squat remains a 200 kg squat but a 440 lb squat would become a 0 lb squat.

I had that problem before. Lets assume you can do 1 rep with the 30kg.

Do 6 sets of 1 rep, then next time do the first 2 or 3 sets with 2 reps, and the last 2 or 3 with 1 rep.

The time after that all sets of 2 reps, then the time after that 3 reps for all sets, etc, etc/ until you get to 6 reps for 6 sets.

At that point the 40kg should be doable for 1 rep, it's okay to make it a push press when starting out. Repeat with the 40kg onwards to the 50kg friend.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram
>On April 7, 1795, the gram was decreed in France to be "the absolute weight of a volume of pure water equal to the cube of the hundredth part of the metre, and at the temperature of melting ice."
>Since trade and commerce typically involve items significantly more massive than one gram, and since a mass standard made of water would be inconvenient and unstable, the regulation of commerce necessitated the manufacture of a practical realization of the water-based definition of mass. Accordingly, a provisional mass standard was made as a single-piece, metallic artifact one thousand times as massive as the gram—the kilogram.

No. Things like calves, forearms and many more things are not even considered and it's a dumb program overall. Good bodybuilders, natty or not, don't train like that.
>>
>>39123650

>The gram, 1/1000 of a kilogram

Think about it anon. You could use it
>>
>>39123321
theres a good reason for that.
see, what is the size of USA? How many inhabitants does USA have?
do YOU think that with 318,9 millions, USA would be inhabited by stupid people?
u must be fucking stupid to think that non of those people are gonna be smart.

for the universities. how rich are USA? okay? so you say they are the richest country in the world and thats why they can build HUGE campusses and aford the best teachers? is that also why they can build top of the line facilities for their athletes and train their athletes like fucking genetified mise?

okay big boy, well i think we have come to a conclusion

Imperial vs metric and physics because they relate to weights

universities cause they have gyms

the moon affects the tides which is important if you open water swim

jewish people also partake in fitness you bigot

same goes for autistics

Australian football is a sport, how is it not /fit/ related?

ancient Greece birthplace of THE OLYMPICS

cars - they lift cars in strongman competitions

/fit/ is on the internet

fast food - IIFYM

drugs - steroids are drugs

so only democracy is not fit - related

>>
>>39126964
I wish there was actually some decent discussion on relevant topics for once on this fucking board.
>>
>>39127548
The problem with anonymity and with perishing threads is that every discussion has to start from the top. The same surface-level arguments have to be made, then discredited or qualified, and by then the thread has hit the bump limit and the whole process has to start over again.

It's like the difference between a sitcom and a drama. Most sitcoms are written so that a person can jump in on any 1 episode and understand most of it, and the plot of that episode is resultantly shallow. Whereas a typical drama won't make sense unless watched from the first episode, with a correspondingly more complex storyline.

The design of this board really does not allow for in depth technical discussion, its design produces memes and often wrong/oversimplified 'community knowledge.'

For actual fitness discussion, this is a pretty bad place to look. I think it's a good gateway for highschool losers from /b/, but other than that its really only good for feels and high test threads.
>>
>>39127548
