When did you grow out of the squat meme?

It's literally a meme parroted by fat fucks like rippleltoad and powerlifters in the 120kg+ class.

If you're not power lifting or olympic lifting there's ZERO reason to squat.

I haven't squatted in 4 months. I used to squat 220kg x 3 but now I just leg press, leg curl and RDL.

I did SS then Texas Method so I look like shit now despite my lifts.

To be fair, genetic knee issues are definitely possible.
My entire family runs shitty knees and I also experienced knee pain moving into the 200s with my squats.

Leg press and other shit is even worse though. They'd literally kill my knees entirely.

For now I'm stuck with sumo, seeing if my knees endure it and meanwhile looking what I can do.
But my hopes are low that I will be able to squat without killing the knees in the future.

Skelly doing SL 5x5. Squats pretty much the only thing I don't struggle or stall much with. Swear pant legs a bit tighter. Swole guy at work complimented my calves.

It's not bad, but I'm way more anxious to fix my fucking pipecleaner upper body. Been putting faith in popular opinion of a beginner strength program and all I've seen treat squat as some absolutely essential holy grail of compound lifts, but still doubt lingers.

aight, i got home, heres my routine:
PPLPPxx
Push:

>Bench 4x5 (you can switch ohp and bench so do what ever you like first or alternate between doing them first)
>cable flyes 3x12
>lat raises 3x12
>rear seated raises 3x12
>tri pushdown 3x12

Pull:

as for advice...
do not get injured, this will hinder your progress and your ability to go to the gym.
best ways to not get injured is taking it slow, hold good form, and leave your fucking ego at the door, you have to work your way up and its impossible if you think you can bench 200lbs when you start out.

at the moment im eating at around 300kcals-500kcals surplus and im gaing around 700g every 2 weeks or so. you might need less or more calories, but i would suggest a surplus of 300kcals to 500kcals for a lean bulk.

if you like to train your abs a little more feel free to incorporate some exercises, i train abs every day with planks, side planks and hanging leg raises.

remember to get enough sleep, AT LEAST 7 hours and preferably nothing more than 9 hours, this is curcial for recovery and mass gaining.

feel free to use protein or weight gaining supplements if you have a hard time hitting your macros or calorie counts, i myself take 2 protein shakes and 1 weight gain shake everyday, not because im a hard gainer, but becase im very busy.

so leg days must take you around 20-30 minutes tops?

my leg days consist of back squat and RDLs as my main lifts, followed by front squats and box or pause squats as assistance work, and leg presses, calf raises using the smith or leg press machine, and seated calf raises as pure accessory work. sometimes i'll do front squats as my main compound and do lighter back squats for more reps. i also used to do leg curls and leg extensions but they gave me knee pain so i stopped doing them (much worse than any variation of squat ever did).

i do deadlifts on pull day.

Squats are not a meme. Do your chins and dips on SL alongside the bench, OHP and rows and your upper body will be fine.

Once you switch to an intermediate routine you'll make better upper body gains. A routine with more upper volume is ideal. Candito's 6 Week has loads and still keeps you strong as Fuark. Would recommend once you're ready for it.
