/run/ - Running Thread "Winter Is Coming" Edition

/run/, a general for running and other forms of exercise that benefit your aerobic fitness

protips:
>if you have no experience with running, ease into it. focus on your breathing, then your form, then on building distance
>hydrate
>if you feel acute pain when you run, stop and consult a physician or the internet. otherwise pain is good
>smoke weed everyday
>go pre
>joggers sweat, runners bleed
>try your best

>I ordered a gore-tex knockoff outdoor research jacket and it's shipping

I'm gonna make it brehs
>>
>>39097504
I took 3 years off after high school, so iktf. I'd run local races and get my block knocked off by kids still in HS. I found a summer track series that motivated me to get sort of back into shape (went from a 6:30 mile the first year I did it to a 4:50 by the end of the second). Now I run with XC at a JC and after training every week I'm 3rd fastest on the team. you really don't realize how much running with a team strengthened you back in HS until they're gone.
>>
>>39097504
You can, you gotta give yourself time and consistent training. It took me about 7 months to get back to around 15:30 in the 5k, but I didn't gain that much weight since high school to be fair.
>>
>>39097521
>>39097504
hell there could even be room for improvement. I never timed myself in a 4 mile effort back in HS, but 5:30 pace felt really good, it being midseason and everything. it really depends on how boneheaded you were in high school. I insisted on never training in offseason and didn't drink nearly enough fluids. now I drink at least a half a gallon a day and it's really paid off. after workouts I'm rarely sore and have noticed a much greater ability to recover.
>>39097529
how did you motivate yourself to run? did you make the comeback alone?
>>
>>39097545
>I insisted on never training in offseason
That's how I was too; still sometimes regret being a lazy fuck in hs and not reaching my full potential

one more thing I should mention is that I was professionally diagnosed with autism and schizophrenia while I was in high school. this means that I was put on psych medications which made me put on ~30 pounds. up until week and a half ago I was on an injectable form of risperidone. now I vape CBD and went from 24:00 in a 4 mile effort to 22:00 in about 2 weeks. I really like running but when coach makes us do core workouts (pushups and shit) I cry like a bicth lol

Basically anything made out of lightweight synthetics. You could also wear a compression top and whatever over it.
I actually lube up before going on training. Just smother your nips in vaseline (or your lube of choice). You can do the same for whatever hot spots on your body.
For instance when going out on trail races I cover in vaseline my armpits (possible chaffing due to camelback straps), the area above my hips (straps again),my groin (needs no explanation) and of course nipples.

>>39097664
If you do jiggle, compression apparel is your best bet. You will look like an overcooked sausage but it will help.

what did he mean by this?
>>
>>39097633
If you are worried about the impact of running try bicycling or swimming. When I was in HS I ran on a micro fracture in my foot and it was probably a bad idea.>>39097609
It's a beautiful night. I'm tempted to go on a distance run bc it's a full moon.
>>
>>39097726
Idk I saw it on a shirt
>>
>>39097699
I Vaselined my nipples and my running shirt had fucking Vaseline stains in them even after washing. I didn't even notice until midway through the run I noticed I had marks on my shirt that looked like I was fucking lactating.

No matter how moisture wicking, the shirt gets pretty heavy after being drenched with sweat and starts rubbing on my nips. Would a compression shirt stop this from happening?
>>
>>39097714
You're probably over pronating. Look into that.

>>39097757
It could. And if it doesn't you can always tape that area.
Get some surgical adhesive tape or waterproof bandage (at your friendly local apothecary), take your ordinary trimmer, trim the area around your nipples (depending of how hairy you are this step might be skipped), and simply tape over your nipps.
>>
>>39097757
Maybe look at "corn" bandages but bigger. You'd have to make them yourself, but they're like donuts where your nips would go in the holes of. Just don't make them to big or you'll look like uve got tiddies

I actually run with normal shoes in a city environment so mix of trails and pebbled sidewalks, but there are also shoes made for icy surfaces. Check out Icebug. Truth is you cant run as fast as when its not slippery.
Atleast here they sell winter running thighs. For upper body normal winter sportswear? Like cross country skiing equipment. Layers and dry keeping materials. Gloves.

>if you feel acute pain when you run, stop and consult a physician or the internet. otherwise pain is good
It's been a few years since I've ran, and reading this reminded me why I stopped. Basically, when I'd run or jog for basically anything longer than a half mile, I'd have to stop thanks to an extremely sharp, almost pinching sensation at what I'd call the base of my spine, rather than any real loss of breath. Until I find out what causes this for me, I don't think I'll be running in the future either, which sucks because I could certainly do with shedding some weight. Any anons have a clue? The best I could come up with was my running form being fucked in some way.
>>
What is "good running form" and "proper breathing"?
>Keep your body straight and your core somewhat tight
>Look in front of you
>Land on the middle of your feet
>Don't stomp the ground but slightly touch it and propel yourself forward, as if your feet were springs
>Breathe rythmically, however fast you need
>Inhale from nose and exhale from mouth if possible, else breathe from your mouth
Are these right?
>>
>>39098551
Stomach sucks in and chest rises when you breathe out, sticks out when you breathe out. May seem intuitive to a lot of people but I know I wasn't breathing with my diaphragm a lot in the beginning
>>
>>39098551

"middle"; aim for the ball
honestly you know how to run already, it ain't complex, you learned it when you were 1 year old.
fast breathing is for beginners, and it can exhaust your lungs and the related muscle very fast; what you want is deep breaths that take maximum amount of O2 to your body. you aren't having a panic attack, you are performing intensive exercise. deep calm breaths with a relaxing tempo.

once you run enough you will discover that nasal breathing limits the amount of O2 you can intake, which results in everyone who runs choosing to breath through the mouth.
>>
>run a 10k yesterday
>completly stoned
>notice I place my feet not on my ball, or even roll it from the side.
>more like, wrap it around the ground somehow.
>feel one with nature

Wintertime! Run on dirt nature trail near house. Only run outside, hate treadmill. Wintertime time means cold weather military boots and knee deep snow. 4 mile run makes quads burn like fire.
>>
>>39097481
When I begun to move I weighed 97 kilos, took pills for my acid reflex and every part of my body ached. I'd be out of breath just walking up the stairs at work. At the first sign of a common cold my asthma would blow up and I'd be coughing for days.

In short, I wanted to die.

Something inside of me snapped. I bought myself a pair of running shoes and headed out. Jogging was terrible, and brief intervalls of running was rewarded with a veritable fist to my swelling gut. I wanted to give up, to go home and shovel my face full of crisps and coke and chocolate, and every lamp post and park bench looked like a tempting place to stop.

"Just run to over there and you can rest, it's fine, you're doing great. Listen to your body. Give up."

But that voice inside grew fainter with every step, and the feeling of absolute bliss after a run was done and I was standing in the shower fueled me.

Three kilometers grew to four which grew to six. Times started creeping down, and I found myself starting to long for the next time I'd get out for my next workout.

Last week I did my first straight ten kilometers and I'm down to just over half an hour on six kilometers, as well as having gone down to 81 kilos.

Running is the single best thing that's ever happened to me.
>>

I can't imagine running stoned. Does the exertion feel worse or better?

Went to Decathlon (UK Sports store) and had a quick gait analysis.

>>
Slightly related, but I'll still ask because you guys probably have more knowledge/experience with regards to sportclubs than the average gymgoers.

Does anyone here have any experience coaching sports? I'm thinking of taking a coaching course for my basketball club and becoming an (assistant) coach, since I want to stay involved even though I can't play (shin splints).
Is it any fun? Can it be combined with uni/work? Is it difficult?
Any other thoughts, advice, or experiences?
>>
>>39099094

>>
>>39099237
Kalenji is just Decathlon's house brand, which is why you never see anyone talking about them.

>>
>>39099569

>>
>>39099553
I kinda help coach my unis athletics club. If the players want to learn and you feel like you know what you are doing it can be nice.
Everyone at my uni sucks but some want to learn and it's nice to see them improve and thank you for it.
>>
>>39099593
Is it easy to combine with uni/work? Also, is it difficult?
Any advice?
>>
>>39099616
In my scenario yes because I train and coach at the same time, so it takes up 0% extra time for me especially as I'm only teaching the basics.

Your scenario is different though, best advice is take the courses, get the qualifications and then get an assistants job and move up from there. You already seem to know what you are doing, also ask any coaches you know for tips and advice.

thing is, I haven't found out proper size 46 shoes that give overpronation support AND have spikes to give better surface grip during winter runs.

from what I remember, last two winters we have warmer spring days, with February often having +5 during noon and than -10 during nights, meaning snow on roads would melt during day and freeze during nights, resulting in various snow covered roads becoming ice-roads where you had no chance of running.

my steps would be like half shorter with barely moving faster than walking on those icy paths... winter fuck yeah?

Ha! I run AND I want to die.

good if running helped you, but I cay say from personal experience that once you start getting more and more addicted to it, you will tolerating ever greater distances, until your body becomes accustomed to the exercise, resulting in smaller rewards via endorphins; the runners high becomes harder and harder to reach.

repeating 100s; and the answer is repetition
keep doing that one mile if you must until you become good at it
then start doing two miles until you become good at it

repetition leads to improvement

if running is too rigorous, go for long walks.
even if they are long slow walks. keep repeating them until you can do long fast walks. fast walks can be quite effective cardio, maybe 70-90% of the efficiency of running. (some slow jogging can be less demanding than really fast walking)
>>
>>39100100

Slow down to run farther. You need 3 30 minute cardio sessions per week at the absolute minimum to get cardio gains.

>how do i improve my endurance?

By slowing down. If you can run one 8:00 mile, you can go out and run 5 at a 11:00 pace right this very moment.

The pace you do 1 mile time trials at and the pace you actually train at are two entirely different things. Most runners only hit their 1 mile race pace for a few minutes at a time when they do hard VO2max interval work (and 1 mile races, of course).

Hard to say, it like with everything on weed, there is just more of it. So you might feel more tired at times.
Gives great control over the body though. Also your body somehow uses oxygen better right after smoking, but I think everyone knows about that.

Yeah, I had enough sugar, had 3 gel things and a bunch of gatorade. I wasn't really tired, it was just my legs were dead at that point. All my muscles were on fire and I had to stop and walk around mile 22. i could barely walk afterwards haha.

You're right. Running is kind of the adults entrry into fitness. You don't need to join a team or buy a bunch of equipment, you just get some shoes and clothes and you can run. Running just happens to he the most convenient so thats what people turn to.

I don't do it often but exertion almost doesn't register in a way. It's hard to explain - logically I know I'm getting tired and at some point I'll be near my limit but physically, it doesn't register and there's no sense of 'I'm need to push myself or I'll give up' - you just keep going and time distorts itself.

these kind of questions never have good answers, which is why running is more about chasing personal goals. you should always race against yourself, try to beat your previous achievements. no point in comparing yourself against dedicated ultra runners or against Olympic elite racers.
running is a hobby and a lifestyle, you do it for your own benefit, it not just about hitting this or that number, but a way of life.
>>

basically how much "buffer" the shoe has

heavier runners require bigger drop, whereas people who want to race fast usually choose minimal drop. better cushioned shoes have higher drop

say front has 10mm cushion, back has 20mm cushion, the drop would in that shoe be 10mm

The reason people generally use marathons as goal is because

A half marathon is impressive for sure, but a marathon is notable for being so hard on your body compared to shorter races.

That's subjective and based upon personal values. I think even 5k is impressive since I see many struggle. I have witnessed many 70+ seniors complete it when they never done any physical activity in their lives while having many debilitating diseases. In the first half-marathon I ran in had a 68 year old lady who had MS and lupus and completed it in 2:15.

So I'm well on my way to losing fat. Currently weigh 210 lbs and eating 1700 cals. I do calisthenics 3 days a week and run 4 days a week on my cross trainer. When your foot pronates, your knee twists. When your hips sag, your knee twists. Try building foot and lower leg strength, hip and core strength. You'll be more stable and less prone to injury.

That's my off the cuff guess at what's going on.

I can't break the 30 minute limit when running a 5k on 1% incline

at around 24 minutes everything inside me is like "FUCK THIS SHIT" and that's when I quit

why is it so much more difficult? I mean the difference is only 1%....

Running shoes are important, but that's not the same as having to spend a lot of money. Main thing is that they fit well and give as much support and cushioning as you need. A good way to save some money is to look for last years models (usually, the main thing that changes is the colour).

I think my chafing has to do with cold weather, sweat, and an ill fitting shirt that's made of bad material. My nips get hard, cuz the cold, sweat weighs down the shirt, it's loose so it keeps rubbing against me.

I've been running almost entirely without foresight or real goals, just "get better, run faster and longer", and feeling it out, and I'm new here, so apologies if something I ask is obvious or trivial
first, is it normal to need a longish time to recover after particularly long runs? I'm talking on the order of days, I first felt it when I jumped mileage from ~6 to 10 miles, and had dull hamstring pain for several days/couldn't replicate the distance for about a week, and I ran 15 yesterday jumping from around 12, and had a similar ache today
second, and maybe this is stupid/useless to ask, but what should I be aiming for/what do you all have as targets? choose a marathon a while away and just feel it out, try to push speed instead of distance for something like a half marathon, ?

I'm just interested in running but it would be nice if people like at least nodded at me. I don't wanna initiate conversation but they could at least smile at me..I sometimes even look at them hoping they would stare back

my friend with asthma ran a 6:30 mile after eating a pot brownie. before he hadn't gone sub 7:30
>>39121529
As someone who ran 4 miles in 22 minutes, took 2 days off, then ran 12 miles (about 4 miles longer than I have trained at since I've started training again 2.5 months ago), I can say the 12 miles left me aching more than the 4 miles did, in spite of it having been much less intense of a workout.

I don't really get reactions from anyone but other runners, but I run with earbuds in
maybe smile at them, or give them a wave/nod or something? the sad truth is pretty much everyone's self-obsessed and doesn't spend much time thinking about other people, and to them you're a transient utterly undistinguished entity who's gone from their lives after you pass by, so "common courtesy" doesn't really exist, especially if you're on a path/low-pop road/somewhere where they aren't societally shamed into it
>>39121624
drink a lot of light-roast coffee 20-30 minutes before your run

I always forget how much easier and faster my runs are coming out of a humid summer.

Come the first humid run next year I'll have lost all my humidity cardio gains and adaptations, and feel like I've never run a day in my life.

Started running, and find my biggest problem is nausea. I think it's mostly caused by swallowing air.

Any idea what I can do other than practise more?

How long since you started running?
If its only a week or so then just keep at it and it will get much better.
You just need to get your body used to it is all.
>>
>>39121694
most people on long runs zone out after a while
>>39122786
try to fight your instinctive faggotry of swallowing with every breath
>>
>>39122811
Yeah, only a few weeks.
>>39122821
Mostly try to breath through my nose.

Guess I'll just keep going until I git gud. Thanks sempais.

Ive been doing 5x weekly trainings with a minimum of 5k(3x5 2x8-16) this was my first time training this much in my life and I would recomend making sure your running correctly so you dont end up in pain
>>
>>39117882
Do you really believe this a 5k is nothing and every remotely activ person can do it given enough time
>>
>>39118156
Dont stop running then :^)
>>
>>39121629
Most people don't run so that they can talk during it
>>
>>39122926
So far I've only run twice. After the first run on Wednesday I was very sore and pained.

Sundays run, I had some a very slight shin splint in my right leg and some soreness in the bottom of my ribs.

Both I put down to being a "I'm not used to this". Once I get over these first few runs, I should be more able to go regularly. But I guess build up to every day.

Going again tomorrow, so from a 3 day gap to a 2 day gap. Then should be able to go every other day and then probably try it out.

Are you really this idiotic? Are tge trolls starting to invade these threads? Remove layers as you warm up.

How's your obliques and glute medius?
>>
>>39121624
Oh hey, we're in a similar situation. I also had that time a few weeks ago. Can do 15:20 now. I've been doing intervals twice a week and a long run every week.
>>
>>39118051
I only take my watch, minimal keys and if I need to keep a card for tram eg I take it, but don't regularly
>>
>>39118051
Currently run with an Armband that has space for my phone and a front door key. But wondering about getting a fanny pack or mini back pack to carry them in.

And use Bluetooth headphones, not wired.
>>
>>39115419
Run outside.
>>
>>39118051
Keys and sansa clip only. People are too tied to their phones. Spending more time texting than lifting at the gym, stop their runs to check msgs, then drop their phone on pavement. You don't need it. And what are you going to buy on your run that you need your wallet?
>>
>>39118156
And this is why moisture wicking base layers are important. We're you wearing cotton or something? Also, shed layers, unzip stuff as you heat up so sweat can evaporate and you don't overheat so much.
>>
>>39124194
Phone for me is playing music and tracking my run.

Only time I stop to mess with it was when I switched my headphones off instead of skipping the track, but that only took 30 second to sort out
