Because the brain is constantly flooded with thoughts you can't control.
Meditation works to build resistance towards the spontaneous thoughts.
5x20 deep breaths a day should get you to an I! of 120 minimum
>>
To strengthen the body, you need to use it often.
To strengthen the mind, you need to do the exact opposite.

>You're a retard.
>Enhances cognition on a biochemical level of the anatomy rather than sharpen the skill itself.
>Attention span, focus, acuity, relaxation, self-control, and emotional regulation.
>Vague as though they may be, they are ingredients of a healthy thinker and self-aware person, especially attention span. That is far more than just orienting with tasks longer but to have more data capacity altogether.
>Implying think/do nothing. Meditation is not to think nothing. It is to focus on something that is not so provocative of chaotic thinking; something constant. Breathing, mantra, body/posture, music, and I suppose nothingness is a less common choice.
>The problem with "think nothing" is that the user begins to watch itself watching itself (ad infinitum) and kind of begins to make you insane.

Most books are the biggest horse shit I've ever known, non-fiction is particular. Your best bet is a responsive piece to famed artworks or philosophers. Philosophy by nature is open to disagreement and often times every philosopher has an armada of contracting rivaling branches of philosophy. But if you're going to read, say, a study on culture, psychology or whatever rather than think for yourself then your just a joke.

>I meditated once
You guys do know you have to do it longer than a few days or weeks to notice much of a difference ive done it for 8 months now and anxiety is pretty much dull. Sadness isn't so bad now and I can smile about it and im much more focused in everyday life because it cleared some of my brainfog.
>>
>>39094656
It's not so much about the length of time, it's about the intensity of concentration you are able to attain. With focus, you will cease to be aware that you are trying to meditate, for example.
>>
>>39094108
You know, the best gains and losses you will get is when you are doing nothing.

As a matter of fact you can only get certain gains and positive losses from the near impossible to perfect art of doing nothing.
>>
>>39094721
That sounds great. Been doing it for less than a month so it will take time, but I'll get there.
>>
If you're doing nothing you're doing it wrong. Void meditation is counter-productive to long term mental gains. Start by following your breaths. Once you can maintain onepointed focus on your breath without interrupting thoughts, then you can actively focus on doing nothing if you want to follow one of the Zen paths. There are many other options for meditation though.
>>
>>39094740
Have you read The Power of Yoga by Julius Evola?

He synthesizes many other texts, and gave me some very useful visualization tools, and allowed me to finally meditate 2pl8.
>>
>>39094768
No but I'll check it out, sounds interesting. Didn't know Evola wrote about such stuff too.

10/10 excellent meditation/secular buddism collection of talks.

noted meditation practitioner and abrasive super skeptic sam harris, for example, explicitly recommends the Insight Meditation Society (this place) which is run entirely on volunteers.

I agree with Harris that most yogis are utter horseshit. Gil Frosdal, however, is a masterful teacher.

His command over his own mind is the source of much of his basedness. He was way into all schools of meditation as tools of self-mastery/power/will. Good stuff all around.

western meditation is watered down bullshit.
as is guided meditation, meditating in specific poses, etc. etc.

>2016
>not doing superior chinese taoist meditations

If you can be aligned and be tranquil,
Only then can you be stable.
With a stable mind at your core,
With the eyes and ears acute and clear,
And with the four limbs firm and fixed,
You can thereby make a lodging place for the vital essence.
The vital essence: it is the essence of the vital energy.
When the vital energy is guided, it [the vital essence] is generated,
But when it is generated, there is thought,
When there is thought, there is knowledge,
But when there is knowledge, then you must stop.
Whenever the forms of the mind have excessive knowledge,
You lose your vitality. (tr. Roth 1999:60)

in plain english it means letting go completely and experiencing nothingness.

traditionally there are three types of meditation, you either fixate yourself to calm your mind down, you use that calmness to analyse and visualise, or you can use that state to bring your mind back to the present. i.e. either nothing, visulaisation of possibilities, or experiencing the present.

anything else is just fluff and not based on first principles.
