What are heavy band pushups?

you use the resistance of a heavy band to make pushups harder. a lot more convenient than weighted push ups imo. and you can make them extremely hard to do

The big upside of band pushups (or any other sort of loaded pushup) is the free movement of the scapula. It tends to beat up your shoulders way less that way so you can often do more volume which means more gains plus it seems to have more upper back usage and upper back volume is rarely a bad thing. Its a fairly common high volume accessory movement in powerlifting circles as a result, especially for new lifters.

The downside is that eventually it gets real fucking awkward to load.

Yes, but it'll get awkward fast. Its hard to load the chains yourself and you can end up needing an absolute boatload of them to get the same level of effect as one of the heavier bands.

huh i can't imagine this ever being the case. i mean the bands start getting wide but you could double them before then. i have a 170lb band and it fits in my hand still.

You can't really use doubled bands for band pushups, at least not with the heavier ones. It ends with the tension at the top being so insane that you can't really do anything with it.

But you'd need to be a damn strong presser before that really ends up being an issue.
