Cyclists are alright. Not the epitome of fitness, but who is?
If you can cycle at 25mph for 2 hours constant then I applaud you.
>>
>>39022902
You say that, but they can outdistance you on the flat, outclimb you in the hills, and outsprint you at the finish. What do you have to say to that?

You don't do unnecessary things when you're training for the specific requirements of a sport. Cyclists need lots of lower body strength (therefore they do squats) but they don't need a bunch of unnecessary upper-body muscle because it doesn't make them ride any faster, and it actually slows them down on the climbs. Meanwhile they have exceptional amounts of aerobic endurance, muscular endurance, anaerobic endurance, and mental toughness. Gymcels like most of the denizens of /fit/ can't claim those things, and from what I've seen don't even have the personal discipline to obtain them. They're only good for a few reps of lifting things in the gym, not 60 minutes of low cadence muscular endurance work at Threshold. Cyclists are far and away the real athletes compared to at least 95% of /fit/.
>>
>>39022889

30 inch quads and 10 in biceps just looks ridiculous
>>
>>39023005

>>
>>39023037
>pro cyclists are more fit than part time lifters
Even the amateurs are more fit overall than most of you gymcels. I've seen it time and again, some 'big guy' thinks that riding a bike 50 miles is trivial and he'll blow everyone else away, then before he's even 10 miles into the ride he's toast, off the back, and wondering how he'll find his way back without dying. Or they get to a climb, and Mister Gymcel sputters out within 30 seconds and gets dropped off the back of the pack. You guys are not 'athletes' you're just gym-rats with nothing better to do, and you've deluded yourselves into thinking that you're actually better than everyone else. You're not.

What?

That said, I think in general endurance athletes are under appreciated on this board. Sports like cycling, rowing, and especially running all produce some of the most beautiful examples of the human body in motion.

I believe the undervaluing of cardio by many of the people in gyms and people on this board to be almost as dangerous as not exercising at all.

You are wasting your potential if you only train for strength, endurance allows you to apply that strength in a variety of ways.

Anon said they're physically weak. You then proceed to completely ignore that point and carry on about endurance and why they don't train upper body, which hey presto, means they're physically weak at least in conventional, proportional terms
>>
>>39023136
i didn't say they aren't my point was why are pro athletes being compared to guys who go to the gym after classes and work a few times a week?

Are you retarded? Every long distance cyclist ever has tiny little legs. The actual force required to pedal up a hill isn't that great. They have endurance, not strength and they're shit squatters.

A strong squat is at minimum 4pl8. Go find me an endurance cyclist with anything close to that

Endurance sports are underrated on /fit/ but if i had one thing to say about cyclists, its that their optimization is thier pitfall. In that they can only really run and ride a bike (or swim) primarily.

Wrestlers on the other fucking hand, are some of the most diverse athletes out of anything. The little shits can run, jump, and swim. The middle weights can do virtually anything effectively and the heavy weights can lift, throw, and crush your skull. The saying, "once youve wrestled, everything else in life is easy" is a saying for a reason.

XC/AM rider here. Need strong lower body to grind up steep climbs. Need strong upper body to handle rough downhill trails and jumps. Being strong helps on technical trails greatly so you can pop onto/over/off of trail obstacles. During winter I do bodyweight exercises and put in a lot of miles on the roadbike to prepare for the rest of the year of mountain biking.

Most don't compete, therefore they're not real athletes anyway.

Since most of fit doesn't compete, same thing.

They're hobbyists like most here.
>>
>>39023082

>long distance anything

Nope. Sprints are useful. Strength is useful.

There could some day be a situation where you'll have to get somewhere fast and don't have your car within a few minutes. Or where you can't use machinery.

Long distance is useless, I can sprint to my car and get somewhere faster than a cyclist on long distance.

Running, cycling, it's getting from A to B. Meaning that most of the time it's a retarded way to do things.

Swimming a decent distance, running a decent distance or biking it is important. But once youre past 20 minutes you might as well grab your car.

It's a hobby. Stop taking it seriously.

maybe not aerobic endurance like a 10k, but as someone who has raced 400m-10k in HS and college, it's definitely the most painful

10ks hurt for sure, but the only race that's ever made me puke was an 800, and it happened every damn time I raced one. you're basically going anaerobic for almost 2 minutes straight, that's incredibly hard for the body to deal with

>The actual force required to pedal up a hill isn't that great
>>39023525

The force of each individual pedal stroke may not be huge but they are often exerting 500W+ for an hour or so.
For some context, if you lift a 1 plate barbell 1m in one second, you are exerting 588W for 1 second.
>>
>>39023023
Upper body strength is important for the sprinters because they need to hold themself on the bike to make sure that all of their leg power is going into the pedals.
>>
>>39024806

Woah, no, wait. It's fine as a hobby but that's about it unless you actually compete.

The same goes for people who lift.

>>39024818

I just get close enough and block them if they're being obnoxious.

It's pretty easy to overtake them and then block their way or keep them from passing by going half their speed.

And no way in hell are they going to be able to overtake me.

Overall if they keep themselves to the same rules others do it's fine. But they tend to take up half the road, cut corners and run red lights.

>>39025421

Only if you're being a retard in traffic. Cycling is a great hobby and if you compete you're definitely more athletic than I am.

It's a shame most Cyclists think they own the roads. I wish it'd be acceptable to nudge them off the road or throw stuff at them when they break the rules.

The retards give the decent ones a bad rep.
