How much did you guys bench when you started lifting?
i'll start
>around 35+ kg
>70 kg now (4 months later)
i get sad when people on /fit/ tells me they were able to bench 80 kgs for reps in their first week.

Would it be possible to hit 2 plates before 2017?
>>
I'm not sure as I had to start with dumbells in a shitty gym.
But I was doing SS with them and could only rep 15kg per hand for 5 when I started lol.

Most people who claim to bench 1pl8+ at beginning are either previously athletic to some degree, or lying. A few genetic outliers will bench a load anyway. I know a guy who was the "big guy" in school, never worked out but has a frame like a bull, he benched 2.5pl8 within a couple of months of starting hitting the gym. He has serious potential to be elite tier strong but he'd rather smoke weed and quit the gym. Fucking annoys me who with an average frame spent 3 years getting to a bench like his..
>>
35

i'm a grill btw
>>
>>39015624
honestly, dont ask people here and dont take their numbers serious.
Just keep an eye on actual people at your gym.
Ive been going for 6 months now, i have literally seen 2 people bench 2plate.
Most athletic looking guys do one plate, maybe 70-80kg.

And i regulary see kids who are just starting, benching like 30kg, the other day i saw 2 kids do 25 or 22.5, i couldnt tell.
>>
>>39015624
i started off benching 2 plate when i was 16. If you dont hit at least 3 plaet after 6 months of lifting you have shit tier genetics and will never make it.
>>
30kg for 8x4, could probably go higher but I'm taking it easy, my breast filettes are already completely wrekt
I'm also recovering from auschwitz
>>
It's not where you start but where you end up before stalling, keep it up.
>>
>i get sad when people on /fit/ tells me they were able to bench 80 kgs for reps in their first week.
yeah and everyone here DLs 4pl8 and squats 3pl8

in reality when you go to the gym you see maybe one guy throughout the year who lifts those numbers but for some reason /fit/ is full of them

in reality most people here have been on SS for 2 months and think their progress will keep raising linearly for the rest of their lives so they e-stat the fuck out of everything and are actually really clueless to what it takes to actually start pulling impressive numbers
>>
>>39015715
>Ive been going for 6 months now, i have literally seen 2 people bench 2plate.

Weird. I've been going three months and only seen a handful of people bench lower than 2plate. Fuck even the skinny kids seem to at least squat 2plate.

Feelsbadman
>>
>>39015798
>thinking 80kg is spmething special
Maybe at your high school gym. Keep it buddy you'll hit 2pl8 enetually
>>
>>39015789
i started at 40kg and ended up at stalling at 60kg

what now?
>>
>>39015818
nah not me I started lifting with 3pl8 bench for reps
>>
>>39015821
Eat more and keep going.
>>
>>39015624
Started with the bar, 4 shoulder injuries later and I'm at 150kg.
>>
>>39015624
i started out like 40kg im 55 now for a couple months, ive platoed hard, i have no idea what to do but its making me depressed
>>
>>39015821
Had the exact same problem up until a couple months ago. I'm hitting 80 now, all you have to do is eat more.
>>
Started 40 kg, 2 months of fucking around and now after another 2 I'm doing a plate. Happy enuff.

>>39015624
I remember benching 40kg when i started. I hit 60 pretty fast though.

As of two weeks ago I hit 3 plates though. 140kg natty bench, and it only took 10 fucking years
>>
>>39015848
Switch routine. Also do pushups every day and variations of them, decline, fingertips, wide, diamond etc. They will help develop your pecs. Every day means every day - you will see a difference in your bench within a few weeks.
>>
>>39015868
i wont give my pecs time to recover then, i wont be able to push hard on lift day
>>
I started out benching 25kg for a single, and now, two grindy and painful fucking years later, I can hit 130kg for a very very grindy 1RM on a very very good day.
>>
If you think more than 5% of this board can do 1/2/3/4 pl8 i have bad news senpai
>>
>>39015879
Then take one day off before "lift day". Still do pushups 6 days a week. Also if you really want to increase your bench you shouldn't be working chest once a week, do an AxBx split or something.

But nevermind me, you stalled at 55kg and know better about lifting.
>>
>>39015624
>Would it be possible to hit 2 plates before 2017?

Nigga you'll be lucky to hit 2plates before 2018
>>
so i start at a shity gym 2.5 months, the benches and bars are weasted so i only do dumbbell bench press, right now I do 60's next week I will start going to my uni gym, should I be able to bench 1p8? t-thanks /fit/
>>
Something I noticed when I switched gyms is that the barbell is a lot heavier, putting pretty much all of my lifts to shame
>>
>>39015999
Most people are stronger on barbells than dumbbells. With that said, if you've only really trained dumbbells that might not be the case.
Always better to start a little lower so you can work on form.
>>
>>39015624
60kg
>>
>>39015624
Started out benching about 25 kilos

Got myself pinned under 35ish
>>
65 max, at 185 now
>>
>started at 30kg for half-reps
>now up to 105kg x 3 correct form
took about 18 months, maybe I'm just low test by /fit/ standards
>>
Started with 40kg 3 x 6 and am at 60kg 3 x 5 now after 3 months.
Could probably be higher if I ate more during that time.
>>
>>39015624
I started with a 60 kg maximum and 50 kg f5 rep weight. But after my first week I did 60 kg for 5 rep
>>
Started out with 20kg total (skelly as fuck), worked it up to 60kg in a few months. Just keep at it.
>>
>>39015624
It's all about programming dude. I went from 1pl8 to 2pl8s in a year, going to the gym almost every single day, and eating a healthy, high kcal diet. You gotta ask yourself, do you want to bench 2pl8s or not?
>>
>>39015868
Absolutely don't do this. This is assinine.
>>
>>39015624
most people i've seen start around 30-35kgs , then they progress fast to 60-70kgs. At that point comes the first stall. I was like that and couldnt get to 80 kg bench no matter how hard i tried.

After 2 years i'm at 2pl8 bench but desu i dont really aim for lifting more weight all the time, i change programmes between bodybuilding splits and ppl every 3 months.
>>
>>39016167
Lol wat. Are you asian?

I benched for the first time in the age of 15 or 16 50kg. At around the forth time i hit 60kg when i got the proper technique down. This was then followed with slow progress. Literally all of my friends who started back then where benching either 50 or 60. I played my entire life football (soccer) so i had an athletic base obviously.
If you havent done anything you'll be at the 30kg region and does not matter desu but all these people saying 1pl8 starting bench is high or special are orderline retarded and living in a delusion
>>
>>39015624
started with 1pl8, but I had been doing pushups and stuff before

First time benching I struggled to get 55lbs for 8 reps. Srs

I was 5'8'' 115lbs. Was a distance runner so muscle mass was non-existent.

Been lifting for a year and now my most recent working weight was 170lbs for 6x4 paused reps. Touch n go was 175lbs for 3x5.

Hoping to hit 2pl8 bench as a max by the end of the year. Current max is 205lbs so I gotta try hard.

Such is life as a skelly
>>

>>
>>39015624
45-50kg for a few reps but I was like 17 and never really did any kind of sport besides a few pushups here and there.
>110kg for reps now
not much by /fit/ standards but I still have room for growth.
>>

a few years later and i'm about to hit 2pl8

gettin some wrist pain tho

When I first started I stalled at 60KG pretty quickly. Could lift it comfortably for 3x5 but just couldn't lift anything heavier.

Worked my way to 5x10 (lol and focused a lot on my delts).

After that I was able to progress quite quickly. I think a lot of it was mental, I just had to get to a certain point to get by it.

Yes desu, a lot of people on here started as those super skinny kids who literally never do any exercise and have no muscle at all. Doing sports and stuff will usually mean you have some kind of muscle mass and more weight in general.

I started lifting in about high school but it was all with some crappy machine. I would here talk at school about how easy 1plt was and how benching 200lbs was hard. Me being a noob I thought every one was weak as shit cause I was benching 200 for reps on the machine, not knowing the huge difference. I started lifting free weights seriously with a routine in 11th grade and I remember my 1st 1RM was 180. Seeing how lots of guys were benching over 2plt and some guys over 300 I took it more seriously. Ended up benching 270 before I graduated, felt pretty good for my weight at the time (168lbs)

Whatever you do, don't let the DYEL fggts in a commercial gym serve as goals or limits to your progress. A far better approach is to look up national or world powerlifting records for your weight class. Now, that shows what humans are capable of. Let that be your motivation. It doesn't matter where you start as long as it is light enough to crank out 5-8 reps with decent form. What matters is how hard you lift and how long of a time period you do it for. Eating big, particularly getting enough protein, is another big factor. Hit it hard, eat big, sleep well and you will make gains. Be one of those little faggots fucking around with phones or playing songs on headphones or chatting with the dudebros and you may not make it very far. Big lifts, big compound lifts, that's what you want.
>>
My collarbone area keeps hurting the moment I stop benching (ie after I rerack weight)

Asked about how to fix it, got answers of "don't cock your wrists back, don't push with shoulders when you lift it off"

Still retried, still hurts. Makes no goddamn sense.

Any tips?

Newbie gains are the fucking shit I feel amazing. Granted I was putting more effort into in taking carbs and protein before and after my workouts this week, but I still think a lot of it is to do with my nervous system waking up from being sedentary for like 4 years, and just having the guts to actually move up in weight.

If it makes anyone struggling feel any better tho, I weigh like 140kg/320lb. My body is used to moving around a lot ore weight than it should have had to for a few years.

I started 3 months ago, benching 65lbs (45lb bar and 10 on each side). I now bench 110lbs.

however, I get so discouraged when looking online and seeing the average untrained male benches 135. like it will have taken me FOUR months of busting my ass just to become an average untrained person.

it's not just on /fit/ tho, if you google "average bench" you have dozens of sources from Livestrong, to BodyBuilding, to Mens Fitness, that all say most untrained men in their twenties can bench their body weight.
