The best way is to find labor unions in your area and sign the books. You walk in, ask if you can sign the out-of-work book for whatever position, then wait until your number gets called. Usually that starts you off as a helper but you can work your way up from there.

Just do your research on the union and the field ahead of time and let them know you're new so you don't come across as a tard.
