General question:

Anyone have issues randomly with hook grip?

Been Oly lifting for about 1.25 years, no general mobility issues that I or my last two coaches noticed. And now have randomly developed a mild tendonitis at the base of my right thumb that I'm currently resting on until away. Regular grip of barbell when cleaning/snatching does not aggravate it - only when hooking the grip.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is it just maybe a random thing that you guys run in to from time to time? Or is there maybe a specific thing I'm doing that this is a consequence of?

Yes and no. As the other guy said, your hips shouldn't be kicking the bar out away from your body - the last point it should touch is your hips, then it should travel straight up about a milimetre away from your chest.

As for your mobility, do a few behind the neck presses with a snatch grip with JUST THE BAR if you can over the course of a few sessions. That was enough for me to get into a decent position for the overhead squat.

It is if you do it as a wildcard. If not, it's basically the same principle as the clean but you rack it overhead rather than on your shoulders. Quite a few youtube vids out there on how exactly that works in practice.

I can't overhead squat. I can't even get in a good position without leaning forward and/or getting nerve compressions. I can C&J just fine but can't snatch.

Come to think of it my C&J is probably shit too. The coach said I have significant buttwink when squatting and that my front knee isn't aligned properly when jerking.

God damn it how can something so effortless-looking be so god damn hard?

you have a good form in the pull. your body doesn't understand how to catch the bar at the bottom of the squat though. thats normal, a lot of people don't. i would suggest doing power snatches only for heavy weights and working with a low weight trying to catch the bar at the bottom of the squat. because right now you're just power snatching and trying to squat down with the bar after already catching it

i have le nasty habit of always powering my snatches, and not going into a squat.

my issue in catching snatches low is rigidity. mainly in my back, my hips are usually too rigid, which keeps me from hitting the bottom.

there's not much wrong with catching the weight high and riding it down anyway. when it gets heavy, once it gets heavy, you'll catch it low if you try.

in a proper full snatch, you should catch the bar below parallel if not at the very bottom. very few good lifters will ride it down. if you keep doing that you're going to find yourself hitting a plateau. its much easier to hit a plateau with poor technique than good technique

at maximla weights its caught rock bottom, meaning WRs and other big lifts. thats normal.

pretty much any good lifter when lifting submaximal weights wil catch it and ride it down.

as it gets heavier, they catch it lower.

how do you snatch the bar and catch it in bottom pos without sacrificingnhuge amounts ofnpower in your extension? either you dont put much energy into the bar at all so you catch it low, or you put a normak amount of energy into it and catch it higher and ride it down. eithef way the lift is different.

if youre to do your 50% the exact same as your 95%, youre doing somethng wrong. because the movements will be different. timing will be different at heavier weights, mechanics will ideally be the same, but temoo and energy snd agression are different.

if you snatch 40kg and extend with full force (the same amount of effort you put into 100%), and you get under st the bar just as fast as yiu do with 100%, it doesnt matte.r the bar will stil be locked out before you reach the bottom, because it has so much energy going up. even if you do get down so fast youre in the bottom, youll be tugging the bar down and having it crash on you.

I dont recommend any kind of squat program whether thats smolov, rsr, sheiko, squat everyday, or other program that is specific for one exercise.

too many people use program as if they are some kind of puzzle and try to mix and match. this only cause injuries and broken dreams because those programs dont calculate what you would do for the classics and other accessories.
at least thats the case for hobbyist who dont use drugs.

usually a standard periodized program would make lifters do 10-12 sets ending with 3 sets x 2 reps at 85-90%. this is ofc determined on what stage it is in the program.

for hobbyists, your goal shouldnt be to get fastest results but consistent results that are injury free.

you don't need anything fancy, just make sure you bsq and fsq once a week each at least and it should go up quickly. 100kg fs is nothing much at that weight, so it should be just a few months before 120 at least. Just introduce some periodisation in there so you don't burn out

Texas Method for the Olympics

-MONDAY-
Squat: 4-6/4-6 @ 85-95% of 5RM
Snatch Pull: 2-3/6-8 @ 80-90% of 1RM

-WEDNESDAY-
Front Squat: 2-4/2-4 @ 80-85% of 1RM

-FRIDAY-
Squat: Work up to a PR 3-5RM
Hard Clean Pull: Work up to a PR 1-3RM

This make you very strong, only $20. You can't run program until you pay, part of why is it's very powerful and you don't know it all yet.

You're right it's likely your timing. If your technique is good there's no such thing as "pulling too high," if you pull it higher you just catch it higher.

Experiment with getting under the bar a little later, so really finish your pull and focus on meeting the bar.

Latest PP has a texas/olympic hybrid split over 4 days. Good way to keep practicing/driving up yer lifts while also increasing strength.

Its one major weakness for overall strength is the ommission of bench in favour of press, but definitely worth considering if you haven't already.

i have to be careful because i think im treading into injury territory. some hip probs (pretty sure glute activation is fixing it) and shoulder issues that i've had for the last 2 years (i feel that pretty much any shoulder is a no go for now, when I do heavy classics my right shoulder hurts so bad sometimes that it hurts to do anything with it but have ti dangle at my side), my back currently hurts because of just so much workload ive done and no deload of any kind for months.

hips and back should be fine, Im worried about shoulders though. but i've been doing dedicated rotator cuff work, i'm hoping that with stretching of lats/chest + deload will go a long way.

i just wish i could train more than 3x a week, i can/have been utilizing my first period of class to have a quick 40 min session in the gym, it's only an extra 1-2 excercises 5 times a week, but i it can go a long way.

i just find im too tired for school after training in the mornings, and its valuable time lost that I can spend studying. i also always end up late for 2nd period

yeah, i tried to do upright rows the other day for sickening delts, i couldnt do that properly, my shoulders kept shrugging up, shulders coming forward, and felt a werid grinding in my shoulders. you probably think its nbd but i believe that's bad for the shoulder. bodybuilder style lat raise i cant do righgt either, but lu raise is good and probably wont hurt, rear delt is fine too. that, and i'll include lots of cable rowing. i've been doing lots of rowing on a chest support machine lately, its pretty nice. but rowing with elbow flare works more rear delt and low trap and is good for shoulder.

Not sure - I've never seen it mentioned anywhere else and it's only covered briefly in the book as one of the examples of how adaptable the Texas method is for various sports.

If memory serves it was the same program used/developed by some of the US junior nationals who used to train at Witchita Falls, so if you go searching for 'four day intermediate weightlifting program' on the Starting Strength site you might find it mentioned.

It's almost exactly as you'd expect it to be with the addition of a little bit of dynamic effort work to facilitate tapering before a meet. I'm planning to run it myself once my current strength cycle is up.

You need to concentrate on conditioning your spinal erectors and glutes into lifting heavy loads. Don't focus so much on classics when you're a newcomer, they're not important until competitions are a few months round the corner.

I realize that I'm basically an injury meme now but you may be interested to know that my CT showed some scoliosis. I always passed this off as one side being tighter than the other, but wahey, turns out it's always been there. You can see it clearly in this pic, even though I always rationalized it as nothing.

I also have minor L4-L5 disc bulging. It's not impacting any nerve clusters so the radiologist said it's not really causative of my ongoing SI joint problems, which have not improved in around 3 months

I'm going to take 3 months off from WL and try to hit 130 bench @ 80.

Went to the local clubs gym this morning. Had a little session with the coach and he told me what I needed to fix with my snatch (hipping out instead of up, not finishing the pull etc.). Also said that while my squat form is good and mobility is solid I'm not putting up enough weight and will put me on a heavy squatting program. Was good fun and learned a bit.
