Mods really don't care, and moderation is inconsistent.

Part of the issue is that the moderation team is so small. As they also do it for F R E E, there is no real schedule like an actual job would have. It's pretty much just whenever you're online. So you have some times when mod activity is high, and some times when it's not. It's a particular issue with timezones, and why Australia is notoriously known as a shitpost country. There just aren't any mods awake when Aussies are on.

This small moderation team also causes an issue in that there are few, if any, dedicated moderators or janitors for specific boards. So you have mods that don't know what certain boards should or shouldn't have posted on them, other than vague guidelines. This results in either there being extremely lax moderation where shitposts run wild, or overly strict and Nazi moderation where every fun thread is deleted if it's even slightly off topic.

Compounding this issue is the stance that "moderation should be quiet", so there is no actual communication with moderators, as they don't field questions or critiques in threads. The only way to get in contact with a moderator is through IRC, and it's incredibly unlikely that a mod will be active there, or even know anything about the board you're on.

I moderated The Chon for a few years back when it was operational, and knew the admin personally. Also used to be close to Hotwheels from Infinity, and have known moderators from there as well. As Wizard.

It was a lot easier to moderate because we had a ton of visibility. You could view our private moderation board, each ban was publicly documented with reasons, and we could use our mod tag in threads. It was also a smaller website to manage.

There are some issues that could be fixed with implementation of some of these methods, but 4chan really has no reason to, as they have a monopoly on imageboards.
