Are you really complaining about unit conversions children can do OP.

It really annoys me how we can't make our minds up.

I use such a mix for different things it makes no sense at all. It's a generation thing - for most people under say 40, their parents only used imperial, yet they were taught metric. I have friends in the building trade being taught by guys who only know metric, so it gets passed down.

A friend of mine also worked for the BBC - they use "metric feet" in their studios, which is a foot rounded to 30cm. Madness.
