He should not do what's comfortable, because his tight hips and tight IT band are making his outward feet comfortable when it should actually feel awkward (given that he does not have a wide stance). I have never seen someone DL big weight with outward feet in a conventional DL. It's pretty common guidance to have your feet pointed only slightly outward.
