Maybe a lot of them stop injecting harmful substances into their body because they are retired from the sport?

Bodybuilders have deep rooted insecurity that means they feel the need to pump high doses of steroids that may potentially shorten their life.

Look at Arnie he quit using steroids years ago because he was successful and focused on his political career.

Part of powerlifting is eating a lot to maintain your weight class. A lot of old "retired" powerlifters become coaches. They still like eating a lot, and they no longer have either the time or energy to continue to work out consistently because of how much time they spend in the gym with their clients. That coupled with their eating habits leads to them getting fat.

Middle aged powerlifters who have a therapeutic exception are bigger and leaner than younger guys because of TRT.

This ABSOLUTELY is a real phenomenon . No question. Most retired strength athletes look like normies, perhaps with broader shoulders. There are some rare exceptions, but they are again rare. Jouko Ahola, former WSM winner from like 20 years ago, but he became an actor and required to maintain his look, and probably in fact does train more like a typical bodybuilder.

Generally, outside of healthy issues related to abusing bodybuilding drugs, such as the guys who ruined their Kidneys etc… for the most part, aging bodybuilders tend to look jacked.

Well, if we're gonna use Dorian Yates for our example, then we can rule out certain factors. It’s not necessarily a dose issue, his were high considering he had access to real gear in his time period. It’s also NOT an issue of powerlifters getting too many injuries.

Dorian himself was practically Dr.Frankenstein’s monster he’s has so many stitches from having tendons re-attached.

So again is is NOT an injury issue. That just results in some odd shaped muscles, one biceps has a different shape than the other, one pec might have a slightly different looking insert on one side etc… - THAT does NOT effect the overall better look of the aging bodybuilder significantly.

What DOES seem to be the essential difference, is that bodybuilders CAN train in an easier way and still maintain a lot of muscle.

Strength athletes seem to not be able to mentally pull themselves away from the heavy weights and just coast.

Dorian used to train like a monster himself, but the bodybuilder in his can half-ass it just as good as the next guy – and in terms of longevity – half assing it is a lot easier on the body – a better way of saying it is, they know how to “coast”.

Coasting is where you use a minimum amount of drugs to keep a certain look, and it is not nearly your competitive best, but it’s a good enough look that you look more impressive by a mile than any natty. It requires higher rep training with relatively light and moderate weight. Your joints never ache, you never feel burned out, you just lift to maintain some muscularity, and let the moderate hormones do this trick.

The other issues are diet, and body image.

The aging powerlifter is going to basically just eat normy foods, WITH the added big appetite they learned to have as a powerlifter/strongman. So a lot of them end up as fat asses.

The aging bodybuilder will still regularly go through a diet here and there, because they have an ego that ties into their looks. It ALWAYS was about looking better than other people Yeah they can’t be at their competitive best anymore – but you think they EVER want to stop turning heads? They still want to look better than 99% of the people their age. Why not?Considering they are coasting anyway now.

>>38690979

Arnold Schwarzenegger maintained a bodybuilder physique as an ACTOR in coast mode for MORE THAN TWO FUCKING DECADES after his bodybuilding career ended.

He didn't need to use abusive doses anymore. Much easier to maintain and coast than to build it in the first place.

Lower doses, moderate weight etc...

The reason he doesn't look as good anymore is he is simply getting way too old.
>>
>>38691765
While collagen breakdown is a thing, Arnie is looking less good because he can't use as high a dose as he used to. He's had too many heart operations and his blood pressure is likely to be at a dangerous level, it's why he doesn't use freeweights any more, that and joint pain.
>>
>>38690979
How is that different from powerlifters being so insecure that they have to lift heavy things to prove how 'manly' they are?
>>
>>38691074
The old guy doing two plates is more impressive.
>>
>>38691074
>3 1/2 plate
those beter be 100lb plates or something
>>
>>38692158
The old guy is why I posted the link, but you're wrong, it ain't 2 plate.
>>38692260
It's 485lb.
>>
>>38692347
Oh wait, that was his record he set at the meet afterwards, it's still 400+ lbs.
>>
>>38691914

See that's still irrelevant to the point.

He's had ONE major heart surgery, to replace a Bicuspid heart valve with a Tricuspid valve.

That was it.

Arnold doesn't stay super lean these days and is near 70, yates is in his 50s. Big difference.

Arnold in his 50's was still in awesome shape. Go see the opening scene of Terminator 3, ok, he sort of had love handles.. sort of... that was at the age of 56.

Arnold stayed in much better shape for much longer than most people ever will.

Much of that is due to the "coast mode" mentioned earlier.

again, its easier to maintain 70% of your best shape than to be 100%. If you've pushed it to 240 pounds, contest weight on stage as a bodybuilder, at like 6% bodyfat, then staying 210 at 12%ish is going to be a LOT easier for you, at a lower dose than what it would take for an average person to get to 210 12%.

Think 3 steps forward, and 1 step back.

Physique Arnold had for most of his movie career was absolutely coast mode. Was he still roided? Sure. Were the doses high? pfft I doubt it. That shit is stressful and Arnold is all about comfort and fine things in life.
>>
>>38692575
Arnold is about maximum efficiency.
Resulting in maximum dedication and no stress.
Until he became a politician THE ABSOLUTE MADMAN!
