No one in the community seriously considers it on par with actual running. A lot of them will just use an elliptical if they want to get in some miles on a machine.

Exactly. Treadmills are actually harder on your legs. If you're going to use a machine once in a while, use an elliptical to work done different muscles and reduce impact on your bones and joints.

Using treadmills is absolute hobby-jogger/dyer status.
