It just makes more sense. For instance, my coworker and I each make 70k, but he only takes home about 36k because of taxes, his health savings account, insurance, and he maxes out his 401k every year.

I take home about 53k, because while I do pay taxes, my insurance is cheaper (I'm single), I don't max out my 401k (even though I really should... I only contribute what my employer matches) and I only put money in my HSA to cover deductibles until insurance takes over paying for stuff, and I use my higher take-home pay to pay off debt.

We still both make 70k, though.

Working in expensive restaurants. When I was working a min wage hourly job I never saved over 1k. Within my first year of working in the restaurants I saved 15k and that was while I was spending freely on clothes and food and spending close to 5k on vacation. I was stupid, if I was more careful with my money I would easily have another 10+ saved up.
I'm at a new restaurant where I'm making hourly again but I'm meeting with my manager to see if I can move up and should be expecting maybe 1k a week in tips if I can. After I graduated, I was 15k deep due to student loans and housing costs (it would've been much worse, but I was working full-time while at school to keep down the costs). Ok, sorry if this turns into a wall of text.

I started dating this girl freshman year. We were so close and everyone we knew thought we were the perfect couple.

The day after I turned 18 I married her. The wedding we paid for by ourselves because our parents didn't approve of it (both her and my parents said we were too young).
We both had part time jobs through high school so we had a bit of money saved up between us. The wedding was really small, and during the middle of the week so the chapel didn't cost us anything to hire basically. I did a lot of work to keep the wedding in budget.
But my girl wanted a bit more for the wedding than we could afford though, and I didn't want to be the one to ruin our day, so we took out a loan of 65k. We figured with both of us working for a year we could pay it off and afterwards then she would start college while I started my trade.

2 months after the wedding my wife got a nosebleed halfway through sex and fainted. I had to call an ambulance and wrap her in a blanket, and then I rode with her to the hospital.
At the hospital the doctor gave her a quick look, checked her record and straightaway had her taken to intensive care. She was put into a self induced coma and when I asked, the doctor told me it was terminal brain cancer. I was devastated and called her parents to let them know. When I told them the news they said they were already aware. She had been diagnosed 6 months prior, and this was the real reason why they didn't want us married.
She was taken out of the coma after 3 days and cried and told me she loved me as she was surrounded by her family, mine and our friends. I just cried and hugged her. She passed away less 3 hours after waking up.

This whole ordeal really fucked me up, and I took time off work, so the wedding load kept increasing each month with interest. Went back to work, but couldn't function. Boss spoke to me several times. Very nicely and understanding at first, but soon very angry and impatient. Eventually I was let go after 18months. I was unemployed for 7 months and the debt was now at 150k. With the crippling debt I started some credit cards to help me pay minimum monthly repayments so I could avoid the interest on the loan. Bad decision because then I couldn't afford the credit card repayments and started accumulating interest on those.

Its been about 5 years since then. I'm living with my parents and I got a job in that time that pays for the loan debts.
