>that guy who's bigger than you at the gym who gives advice that directly conflicts with Mark Rippetoe's
Give it to me straight /fit/, look up or down when squatting?
Down

It's neither up or down. You keep your neck straight in line with your spine.

Most people look forward or up. Rip's an outlier in that respect.

if you're low bar squatting? you have a very interesting neck if you look anywhere but downish....
>>38637891
Slightly down if lowbar squatting, neutral if high bar squatting
Everything else is broscience, looking up causes your back to hyper extend in most cases, and there really isn't a benefit to it
Literally doesn't matter at all unless you're squatting like 700+ lbs. And you're not squatting that much so look wherever you want.

Straight forward
Depends on what you're trying to do. Rippetoe recommends looking down and leaning forward in order to get maximum hamstring activation from squats. If you want quad activation, you want the exact opposite, look straight forward or slightly up (if you're doing high bar) and try to keep your torso as upright as possible. Most raw powerlifters look straight ahead, so that might tell you something.
I face forward but look up with my eyes towards the end of a set. It encourages you to not look down at the very least.
I dno wtf high and low bar squatting is. I put a bar on my traps and squat as low as I can

Yeah, I also think it's kinda stupid (deadlift variations are much more effective for hamstring activation), but that's Rippetoe's explanation.

This should be down, because your spine should be pretty flat.
