Smith machines are dangerous m8. I've been injured twice on them and I have stayed away from it since.

First injury was a cartilage tear in my knee. Needed surgery to fix that up.

Second injury was my chest because the machine seemed more heavy on one side than the other despite equal plates.

Been doing freeweights and no injury and I'm lifting more than ever.

By deadlifting. The technique is very slightly different (moreso if you're stuck with a smith machine that has an angled bar path) but its basically the same movement.

Not particularly useful except for a handful of weird scenarios, but the movement is definitely doable.

It's actually not as hard as it seems. Yes, the bar is thicker and that makes the grip more difficult. But it also can't roll, which makes gripping it easier.

Definitely helps if you have gorilla mitts though.
