Does wearing a belt on squats increase or decrease ab development?

When I wear a belt, I can feel my abs being used a lot more. Does this mean more ab hypertrophy?

Belt just cuts into my ribs on the way down and causes intense pain. Moving it lower, it doesn't tighten enough cos my hip bones, any higher and its just over my bottom ribs.

I've squatted without a belt for over 4 years and only now just started using a belt...

How can my abs not be doing it well enough after 4 years of beltless squats?

The belt feels like a huge difference, sort of like when I first got olympic shoes.

You're fucking retarded. Having a belt does not "brace your core for you". Having a belt enables your core to have something to press against to create extra abdominal pressure. It definitely helps your abs as well as your lift. You will be able to squat more with a belt than without after using one for awhile.

there was a really detailed on strenghtheory regarding belts. from what I remember, it slightly increases ab activation and decreases oblique activation. check it yourself if you want the right answer.

the bottom line is that the belt is a useful training tool and not wearing it for heavy sets is stupid.

Look at pete rubish as an example, heavy deads and squats mostly beltless and has an insane core and doesn't need belt on over 800 deads
