Training for a warrior dash for shits and giggles (I ought to be able to do that without issue now), and to pass the physical requirements for police academy

Hello /Run/

Been running comfortably for a year now with no injuries, these past few days I've had constant leg DOMS.

Wat do and whys it happening all of a sudden?

Are you running on uneven terrain? I've noticed going from flat roads to uneven roads or trails can hurt your muscles sometimes. Went backpacking the other weekend, despite being well-trained in running my legs were pretty sore simply because of the increased grade hills and roots.
>>
>>37839443
that's a lot of pressure you're cooking up

>>37839581
I think 12min/mile is a good start for noobs, then work your way to 10, and then 9. It depends how much you weigh though. A fat person and a muscular person with no cardio training probably have different standards.
>>
>>37839285
Started HIIT. 3 times so far
I do 20sec run and 1 min rest. 6 times
My goal is to build a better cardiovascular health, more stamina and lose a bit of the excess fat while bulking

Will leg strength develop or is it better to just cut it out?
>>
Guys after I run for a while I feel a weird thin in my leg
When the leg goes down to the ground, due to me being tired and not used to running, it bends much more than it should, like if I would just crumble down, but I dont.
My question is, what weak muscle is causing this...quad, hamstring or calf?

Just started running every day, trying to get in shape for the army. A couple days ago my ankle was hurting so I took the day off, scared I was going to injure it. Today my leg was hurting about three inches above the ankle so I'm doing the same. How can I tell the difference between early signs of what could become serious injuries, and regular aches and pains?
>>

I mean at the knee, like it should, but I lose strength and it goes lower than it should

I train to maintain cardiovascular health and to maximize my experience of our short summers here. My town is laid out perfect for runners, heaps of intertwining routes by/over water and through parkland.
>>

If it's in the joint or in the arch, I wouldn't run on it until it subsides. That's just me.

What if I started biking on days that I'm feeling pain? Would that further agitate the possible injury?
>>
>>37840078

It's definitely worth a try. Climb up the biggest hills you can find, otherwise it is too easy for runners to coast on a bike. It is a different kind of burn, but it will keep your cardio up.

Alternate: sometimes when I can't run for a couple of months, I do stairs. My best time up the CN Tower (1776 stairs, 144 turns) was 14:42 a few years ago. Stairs are gruelling. Double-step as long as you can, and then work on increasing how long you can double-step. At my best I was something like 700 stairs before I started alternating doubles and singles. On stairs, you will have to find your pace all over again. Just like running, it's not as fast as you think. Also, you're going to sweat like a fucker and your lungs will be the dry and hot like the desert.

Cycling is easier :)

I have been running for a few months now but I only really started taking it seriously this past month. It is p awesome. I run for good cardiovascular health and it is nice to be able to eat more without worrying about being a fat ass.

Question:
What to snack on and how long before a run?
My route is about 5km.
If I eat normally and go do a run in the evening/night some 10 minutes into the run I'll feel like my kidneys are about to fall out through my arse along with a larger portion of my intestines.
If I run in the morning without eating anything and not having to worry about bowel movements I'm even more of a weak fuck than usual and I barely have the strength to complete the route within the same time as the previous run.

>>37839444
Are you spending too much time in the anabolic, rather than aerobic range? Keep track of your heart rate if you can, it can go up higher than you think if you're running in summer temperatures.

>>37840010
Don't run while you're fat, imho. Walk, cycle, swim, whatever you can stick to, and start running after you shed some lbs. Running is high impact, and running while significantly overweight can seriously fuck up your knees.

>>37839974

>>
>>37841100
Make sure your jogging is aerobic. I used to jog just a bit too quickly and had to take too many breaks and ended up running less overall.
>>
>>37841077
Shin splints can be caused by an overtaxed muscle or from stress fractures. What you can do about it depends on what's causing it. Is the pain slightly to the inside or outside of your leg? Or right down the middle?

There are a few things that do help regardless of the cause. Make sure your form is good. If you're pronating or striking on your heel, getting some better shoes may help. Running on softer surfaces can help. Stretch before and after every run.

How do I get runner's high?
>>
>>37840307
I've heard that eating less meat/a vegetarian diet can really help with running because protein tends to be pretty hard to break down.

So maybe the meal before you go running scale down the meat a bit and see what happens?
>>
>>37840929
Then you've never 'ran'
>>
>What are you guys training for?
Just to keep fit and burn a bit of fat. Long term goal at the moment is the great north run but that is a long way away
>Do you run road, trail or treadmill?
Treadmill
>stey hidratted
u too m8
>>
>>37841241
Protein does take more time and resources to break down, but I wouldn't say it's bad for runners at all. Eating a high protein meal after a long run seems to speed my recovery.

Before a run though, carbs are where it's at. You burn through your glycogen stores in as little as 20-30 minutes if you're running hard, or running uphill, or running in the heat. I don't worry too much for casual runs, but if I'm racing or going for a pb (or just planning on training HARD) I eat a fairly large, carb heavy meal a couple hours before I run. I like banana smoothies with some peanut butter in them, or potatoes, or rice.
>>
>>37841231

Run until you can't anymore, then keep on running.
>>
>>37841416
My legs can handle it but I usually get side aches or have to take a break to catch up my breath after running too long
>>
>>37841403
complex carbs would be better than sugars for this, right?

oatmeal instead of a chocolate bar
>>
>>37841449
Work on your cardio-fitness. Have you ever heard the "run slower to run run faster" thing? That's true in my experience. Stay in your optimal heart rate range for longer periods of time rather than going whole ham. You'll stop getting those cramps and breathing issues in no time.
>>

I'm training for a marathon in September. Currently I'm road running since that is what the marathon is going to be on. The only time I'm on the treadmill is if it late at night during winter time.

And yes, I stay plenty hydrated.
>>
>>37839942
Sounds like you just don't have enough endurance muscle in that leg. How long have you been running? Does it still bend if you slow your pace? Even to a walk?
>>
>>37841485

>>
>>37841550
Congrats. I'm more of a long-distance runner, so my 5k PR isn't that great (21 min). I got it the other day during the 4th of July race, but damn, that was hard since I'm used to really pacing myself for way longer distances.

Running newfag questions:

1) Is it normal for one leg to be more tired than the other?

2) Is it ok if my knees feel like they've been jarred a bunch and are a bit sore after I'm running or is it an indicator of bad running form?

3) Finally, my goal is to be able to do 2 miles in under 15 minutes regularly and with relative ease. At the moment I can do 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes but after that I drop off pretty hard. How should I approach doing better-- running faster, running longer, or both?
>>
>>37839285

>>
I run routes that are around 5-6k (it's hard to find an exact 5k route near me) and want to get <4 minute kms.
The closest I've gotten is 20:51 for a 5km but I haven't been running much recently so I'll be slower than that now.
What things should I aim to do to improve times apart from running harder/faster and using nothing but willpower?
>>
>>37842731
1) Yes if you got an imbalance.

2) Depends on how long you've been running.

3) Start with distance instead of speed. Speed shouldn't be your concern until you've built a good aerobic base. To get a good aerobic base means distance with good form and cadence.

25min 5km is like a 2plate bench. Attainable for normies and is often the point where many normies simply stop and float about forever.

20min 5km is like a 2.5plate bench, needs some kind of structured training to move on from here

sub 20min is a good time and going under this requires structure and training regularly to attain and maintain

Now watch as i have runners descend on me for my shit tier times and complimenting anything above a 20min 5km. Youre a beginner so your first run will prob be 35mins or somethign terrible but itll drop to the high 20s after a couple of runs and work its way down. For now what i listed should be reasonable and youll adjust your goals as you move up and eventually join the cardioelitists where anything over 17min might as well be a walk

ITT scrubs that will never make it until they realize the only distance and time that matters is the one you ran last time. Comparing yourself to arbitrary benchmarks is utterly worthless. A 17yr old is going to have a vastly different speed, endurance than a 50 yr old. Same for weight, age, length of time training, technique, diet, etc.

Stop comparing yourself to everyone but the one person that matters: (you)

Be careful, running when really fat generally isn't recommended. Start out with c25k like the other anon said but if your joints hurt stop and switch to walking/swimming. Og course it depends how fat you are I suppose.

Unfortunately, runners have a camaraderie among each other more so than lifters. No matter what our times are, we are usually cheering each other on and not downing another person. Even that obese landwhale who is waddling on the course is cheered and told "good job, keep up the good work!"

Noone here can tell you how your body feels. If you're in pain after these runs, then you should take it easier, if you're not, then go for it.

I went for my first 10k run and afterwards I had a stabbing pain in the side of my foot. It took a week before it no longer hurt to walk on and then I gave it an extra week to fully heal.

I just went for my first run since and the pain was immediately back again. Anyone ever had anything like this?

I'm trying to get back into running but my left calf feels really tight after about 400 metres. I can stretch it back out but then it still feels funny and I need to stretch every 400 metres again.
I notice the same calf tightens up if I am simply walking briskly up hill. Normal walking or daily activity I don't notice anything. Any idea what this is all about? Do I just need to constantly stretch it thoughout the day to make it stop?

Because at a certain temperature, it becomes more harmful than beneficial. I'm guessing you don't live in an area that gets major snow accumulation and many people die of a heart attack, with no known history of heart issues, while trying to shovel it? One of my co-workers was one. He was 22 and was a regular runner who ran 6 miles 3x/week. He ended up with a major one but he survived his.

>What are you guys training for?

Nothing- I might sign up for an open track meet later this summer but I neither speak nor read Korean and I'm living in Korea so...

>Do you run road, trail or treadmill?

Road and trail. Weekdays I usually go for a 40 min. run along a river trail by my house- on the weekends I go along the river trail for 15-20 min., hop out, run surface streets for a while, hit up a hilly local trail then loop back down to the river trail and to my apartment.

I've only ever done treadmill consistently when I was recovering from injury. Treadmills suck tbqh

>stey hidratted

Nah- even when I was younger and would go on 20 mile runs I never brought water along; just seemed like a pussy way to run.
>>
>>37848006
maybe not in difficulty to attain but rather its what many simply hover around im guessing. Looking at the regular gym guys, they all hit 2 plate and simply hover there for years, never hitting 2.5 or 3, they just work in the 2plate range forever. Most people who casually run never really break past 20min and just hover in the 20-25 range forever
>>
>>37847874
I only committed to it 14 weeks out so I didn't have the type of prep I would have preferred. I didn't work in distance but rather time on my feet for the previously mentioned reason. I maintained 8-11hrs a week. I would never recommend doing it that way but I have a solid running background and know my body. I was underprepared and paid a high price. 80 miles a week would be a good place to work up to.
>>
>>37848019
I managed to get it below 20min after about 4 months, admittedly only about 10 seconds under but I'm counting it. I had to stop running after I fucked my ankle, so I started lifting.

fun as fuck but ill admit is shit for running, i usually wait until it cools down around sunset before running on days like that. I have to run at the local grass park barefoot because i feel like my feet are cooking in shoes when i run in 30+
>>

this is whats stopping me from going out mainly, my legs can survive but fucking fingers getting icy and feeling like theyre going to snap.

Question; if i moved to where you snowfags are, would i over time become accustomed to it? Or will i forever die year after year
>>
>>37848100
I think you can acclimatise to weather, but you can prepare yourself for whatever weather you're having too. There's nothing wrong with wrapping up warm when it's cold out - snowfags don't just wear shorts and a t-shirt all day no matter how long they've lived there
>>
>>37848116
how about staying hydrated on runs in the cold, do you guys just drink less or not bother with runs <10km?
>>
>>37848120
Really depends on the length of your run, a few km and you can easily run without water. Longer runs and chucking a water bottle in a bag isn't going to do any harm.

If anything it might be a bit better running in the cold, you're not sweating and needing to constantly sip water which is just gonna sit in your stomach and slosh around
>>
>>37848120
There isn't a temperature id run in that would have me carry a drink for a run that short. Just drink plenty up to a 30 mins before you leave and piss clear and your hydration is sorted man.

Running outdoor is a lot harder for some reason.
Don't really have a goal. Maybe going for 12 km/u for 30 min on a threadmill and afterwards go onto beach running I think.
Or should I start running on the beach earlier ?
>>

beach isnt exactly the easiest terrain to run on, can be quiet tiring in my opinion

still a great cardio workout

>>
>>37848225
It's a lot harder outdoors bc the fucking ground isn't moving under your feet doing half the work for you. Did you seriously no figure that out?
>>
>>37848225
Outdoors you have to deal with uneven surfaces, other people, pollen, and any other number of things which might make it a bit tougher. 100% worth it though, it's a completely different feeling
>>
>>37848225
youve got uneven ground, changing wind directions and youre actually needing to propel yourself forward rather than bobbing up and down in the spot like a treadmill. Its a diff type of run and one doesnt really translate to the other, kind of like your barbell bench to dumbell. Similar but different.

Run outside more often id recommend, its more enjoyable as you see more

Running every lifting day 5 mins on treadmill.
Today ran 0.8 km.
Is it good ? I'm trying to up my speed to 1 km in 5 min.
I'm still overweight for about 5-10 kg.
>>
Used to be pretty full on into running when I assumed I was joining the army. I got my mile to about 4:30 and my 5km to 19-20 minutes. I haven't been as disciplined with running for the past year so my times aren't too good. I want to run 1.5 miles in about 9:30 (currently around 10:30-11), how long would it take me with good discipline/dedication to reach my goal? What methods can I use to reach my goal? I have focused on lifting so maybe I could drop some weight to increase my time, I'm not sure how much weight loss affects time though

On my 3rd week of C25K, is it worth investing in decent shoes? i have some cheap generic nike ones that i slip on. and what do you guys use to track your distance? strava? and what time of day do you run?
>>
>>37849291
I run barefoot at the local park which is maintained immaculately for sports and kids athletics so im not good with shoes im afraid.

>tracking
strava i ended up downloading for cycling but i still use the nike running app to track it, i dont think they all vary much desu they all tell disttance time speed and a gps map of your run. Nike one lets me choose a playlist and a power song to turn on in my last 1km of the run which i like. I just use an armband + wireless earphones for this

>time of day
diff strokes for diff folks. I hate mornings while some swear by them. I enjoy afternoon/sunset runs. Dry diff times of day and see what works for you
>>
>>37849291
>shoes
investing in shoes is something that i really needed because i have flat feet. then it really depends on whether you're going to be running in the future. if yes, i would strongly suggest buying a pair; doesnt have to be the most expensive fucking shoe out there, just something built for running.

when i was in singapore i went to some kind of running lab where they saw me run etc and recommended some which was very helpful

>tracking
i used to use strava, but switched to garmin because i decided to get a garmin watch (forerunner 225). it still syncs with my strava though.

>time of day
i live in bagnkok now, so running in the middle of the day isnt exactly an option. i try to go past 4 or 5 pm before dinner or otherwise for a night run. i hate excersising in the morning with a passion, just not my thing

Where do you run barefoot?

There's a bit of a path near a lake near me that goes through some woods, and onto playing fields like you described - not quite as nice though.

We all started somewhere, breh. For me, the distance progression was:

>5K
>5K + 10min rest + 5K
>10K - this is my most common distance to run
>1/2M fueled by finals week stress

The pace speed came through good ol' "practice makes perfect". Aim for 6min/km, then for 5:30/km, etc in your longest run.
Progress is slow as fuck and definitely non-linear, you'll have absolute shit days and days where you shave off a whole minute off your time.
Just don't give up and don't overdo the weekly mileage if you want healthy knees.

Not trying to give you delusions that progress is magically fast, but if you're dedicated enough to join a gym and go through hell for rapid weight loss, you could be close to otter in 6-8 months.

Calisthenics only works wonders only for the first 2-3 months.

There's no such thing as too much running depending on what your goals are/how in shape you are. But yeah minimum i'd say 3 days is fine.

>>
>>37852509

Yeah that sounds like a good point to start out. As you increase the frequency and duration of your runs, make sure to do so very gradually. A sudden jump up in mileage is a good way to potentially injure yourself and get discouraged.

What are the hills like around where you run?

My neighborhood in the midwestern United States is very flat in general, with like one somewhat big hill I try to work into my runs.

The zombie apocalypse.
Mostly use a treadmill, sometimes a track if it's convenient that day.
I hike a lot of trails, haven't made the jump to running them. Sometime soon.

My current furthest out fitness goal is to be able to trail run for two hours.

I live in the eastern appalachias. The hills i run are steep and long. So much that when I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon, the race volunteera were saying to slow your pace because the Oakland hill was a "difficult hill." More like "bitch please." That hill was fucking easy as shit and I didn't slow down going up it.

Hey bro, my half brother is struggling with the same problem as you. Sometimes he work out with me and I know his great effort, but I think he may need to push it more, but he tells me he can't keep with the inhale exhale rutine, and he gets tired. Plus he's fat as fuck you know, too heavy... My question is, how do you train "running" being overweight ? like sprinting for a block then stop or trying to jog or what ? any suggestion ?

Thanks and keep it up, best wishes!
>>
>>37853560
Look up shit like couch to 5k

the problem is when you don't run you will almost certainly injure yourself trying to do if you don't ease yourself into it

Also new runners almost always run way too fast

My personal favourite at the moment. Can take a beating on the trails.
>>
>>37839285

I have a extremely inefficient heart which effects my blood circulation, so lots of cardio/core/lower body training helps.

Can do 4 miles in 30 minutes. No idea if that good or not, but im pretty spent afterwards .

Cant say i really like running a whole lot, but hill climbing/sprints are quite enjoyable.

Started running 4 months ago, 3 days a week. I got winded < 1 mile at first, but now I can run 3 miles. Been running 3 miles for 1.5 months now (consistent 10 min/mile this whole time) and can't seem to run any longer without feeling like I'm dying. Feeling stuck. What do?
>>
>>37861566
it's all in your head. You've set yourself such a strict pace/length that your mind is telling you that you cannot go any further. But I bet if you just add 10%, maybe 1 km if you're feeling bold, and really push through that distance you'll find it wasn't much harder than you thought. Eventually it will come naturally and you will to learn to push your body. You can do it!

4 miles in 30 mins in very good. Entry level army recruitment require a candidate to run 1 mile in 8 mins. you must have had to train hard to get that far. Even if it is on a treadmill.

I wouldn't recommend running when overweight. Increases risk of injury. Start with lower impact high intensity exercise (like compound lifts), lose weight, and then go run.

My local park is full of runners. I always creep up behind some cute chick in tight spandex pants. Watching those ass cheeks shake every time her feet hit the ground is hypnotising. Also great motivation to keep going. When i had enough of the girl in front of me i switch to walking pace. Wait for another cute girl to pass me and then i creep up behind her. Are there any other guys who do this or am i just weird?

Questions!

I started running a couple months ago--starting from former smoker and in the process of losing weight. I feel like I'm starting to enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to being comfortable enough to run in a couple 5k's by fall.

I recently moved to a new city. I've found that there's a running club that runs out of a local bar. After their runs, the bar offers free drinks and appetizers to the runners. I'm thinking of joining them for a run on Monday. There's also this girl I've been casually dating and we were talking about going for a run together sometime soon.

Problem is, being a recovering overweight slob, I am FUCKING DISGUSTING for about 15 minutes after every run. Red in the face, and soaking wet all over with sweat (especially in the summer heat).

I haven't really run with other people much, so I'm wondering how abnormal this is. Am I going to stand out in the running club? Will I not be welcome back to the bar for drinks unless I go home and shower first? Will other people be in the same position? Is this girl I'm seeing going be grossed out, or is she expecting to take a shower after the run too?

Anyone?

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me

I run once a week, I hit 10.5km in 45 minutes, I have no idea if that's a good time though. (186lbs @ 6'1")
I then do calf raises (25 reps, drop sets, from 130kg)

>What to snack on and how long before a run?

i know i'll probably get shit for this, but i swear by eating 2-3 apples and a ton of water before a run.

in my experience, you don't need bread. you don't need a high meat diet. you need a fairly empty stomach. water is the most important.

Is going from no running to two miles a day to fast of a start? Will I start injuring myself?
>>
>>37867030
>Is going from no running to two miles a day to fast of a start?

That was exactly my distance when i started running. It is manageable. You will be sore / have shin splints at first. You will also be very winded at first (this takes time). I recommend mixing it up between treadmill and outdoors. Also get some good quality running shoes.

The most important thing is sticking with it. Target 3-4 days a week. If you can do that for a month, it will become routine.
>>
>>37867155
Should I keep running through the pain if I get shin splints, or will that lead to a more serious injury?
And I'm doing it every day.

>>
>>37867203
Listen to what your body is telling you.

I made the mistake of having the wrong pair of running shoes (too bulky, hurt my shins) and i kept running thinking i could work through the pain. Big mistake.

There is a fine line between pushing yourself and hurting yourself. If you are feeling repeat pain, i recommend taking a day off periodically and sleeping a lot. Also always stretch after the run (I never do it before, but some like to). this helps with soreness.
>>
>>37839285

Do you guys have any recommendations on good running shoes? just some decent ones no more than 100-120 bucks or so
>>
>>37867655
im the guy who ran the half marathon earlier today

i use 'nike free' running shoes. there are plenty of better options out there, but they were cheap and they've gotten me this far without injury, so i'd say they're solid enough
