Hey bros im a powerlifter but I was hoping for some advice on Oly lifts. Im trying to work on my Clean and Jerk form but im not sure how I should be progressing in weight since im not a dedicated Oly lifter and only do it once a week. My form gets bad if the weight is to light and so ill bring the bar higher than I should, and my hip thrust becomes nonexsistent because im sort of rowing the bar since its so light. Obviously if its to heavy my form breaks down.

How should I go about getting the form down since I dont have anyone to coach me on it? I could always post again for a form check I guess
>>
>>36991833
My coach had me go really heavy really often when i was starting to make me get more consistent, but obviously he was there to change things i needed to change.

>>
>>36993676

probably because activating a muscle for the first time when you're in the hardest position on the squat sucks, just don't hyperextend your lumbar and you'll be fine

>>
>>36997507
>>36997604

Seriously, durkz, mate, if you just took a few months to retune your body to actually performing the lifts correctly you'd actually see some dece progress. Three no point in having a 220 squat if you can't even clean 150 consistently and proficiently.
>>
>>36997572
david is good, lots of the new cs kids have decent tech like i've been saying for the past few months

that includes me btw :DDD
>>
>>36997507
his best snatch is 137.5, best clean off blocks is 170

best bsquat is 210 he struggles to dl 170 off the ground lol
>>
>>36998042
That's interesting. Have their methods changed much?
>>
>>36998042
Shame they are known for ugly lifting with worse music and a bad attitude

I also don't believe you have good tech ;^)

I already know you have a bad attitude tho
>>
>>36998126
yeah, since torokhtiy came there's been more focus on using accessory lifts to fix technique rather than just cuing the athlete to do shit differently like they have before torokhtiy
>>
>>36998147
look at devin, stephen ngo, david, kristen they all have been lifting for less than 3 years and have decent tech, idk what you define as good but i think a 120 snatch is good tech for lifting under a year?
>>
>>36998152
calstrength's accessory lifts are always shit though
>>
>>36998188
what do you mean? programming wise? they dont appear on program we do it based on what the lifter needs to focus on

like i said we've been doing what torokhtiy taught in his seminars, even the kids you dont see in videos that aren't weightlifters learn faster due to that

not everything we do is shown on film
>>
>>36998177
I don't believe u snatch 120 8-)

But srs if you do yeah that's very good m8 most people don't get 100in a year

What age and weight? CS seem to be producing some good young lifters, desu they need to. Donny and Jon norf for all their critics were good but they need something proper coming through, Nicole lim and Scott hisaka are just Instagram personalities
>>
>>36998233
A lot of the accessories they do are useless and dont transfer to the lift
>>
>>36998246
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jshGa0skSnw

im not stephen btw, and not gonna tell u age and weight cause that's gonna identify me lol
>>
>>36998261
how do you even know what we do? it's not shown on film, they dont film accessories and most of what's seen in videos are two days out of the 6 days the team trains, mostly wed and friday. technique is stuff is mostly tue/thurs and some sats
>>
>>36998307
from what i've seen it's mostly not useful

but i dont really do any accessory besides squat and rack jerk
>>
>>36998329

>>
>>36998177
120 snatch isnt good tech lol, its not a bad w8 tho desu m8
>>
>>36998970

calstrength is reasonable considering it's taking responsibility for Moorman and Kitts even though Wes has dogshit technique

I am pretty sure a lot of the others train independently. I like Alex Lee the most out of the lot but I don't think he trains on a 'team', just travels to SK and other places for personalized stuff. I could be wrong though, this is just what I've been able to find through looking him up

Anyone here got any experience with an irritated hip flexor? Ive been gradually getting more pain in one hip flexor and i think its because ive started squatting too soon after ankle injury. I heard that i should let it rest (of course), and even refrain from stretching it? I thought stretching was good for injury treatment..
any thoughts brehs?
>>
>>37010299

Yes. Don't do direct static stretches, but stretch 'around' it, especially your groin. Continue to exercise, but listen to your body and don'the push through any actual pain. If we rested every time some muscle in our body was 'irritated' we'd never get out of bed.
>>
>>37010299
I have the same issue.
It was fine whrn I took a few weeks off. BUt dont just hop back into squats, go back in light and slow.
>>
>>37008962

interesting, assumed it was bad shoulder mobility but it seemed to be fine

Noob here.

Does "power cleaning" the weight, instead of a normal clean get you a no-lift in comp.? I understand that at heavier weights, you won't even be able to power clean it, but are they strict on clean form in competition?
>>
>>37010499
No, you can clean it any way you want, unless your knees touch each other or your elbows touch your knees.
>>
>>37010499
You can do any kind of clean. Look at iwf rules. Aslong as the bar doesn't stop (so you couldn't continental clean it) you can power it, muscle it, whatever

you get a very, very limited amount of time as a competitive athlete. if you really want to push yourself and see how far you can go, you will need to compete with injuries. is it good for your long term health, obviously no, but you knew that already. it's your call

if you want a very limited time as a competitive athlete, sure go with that attitude i guess
if you're not going to medal/win/set a record/qualify for worlds/olympics (depending on what level you expect to reach in your career i guess), there's no reason whatsoever to compete injured

my deadlift was 235 as an 85 and the record is 275 i think. I quit deadlifting a long time ago....

Squatted a beltless pb in a commercial gym (thegym for fellow britbong) it was either 150 or 155kg cos I think the bar was 15kg maybe

Got looked at like I was an absolute madman
>>
>>37013269
yeah if your goal is to suck at weightlifting
>>
>>37013336
Yeah sure, spend all your time squatting instead of weightlifting and see how good u get

U fuckin mug
>>
>>37012716

Your starting position is basically like a snatch-grip SLDL. Bring your hips way the fuck down. You start your second pull maybe three inches above your knee, which is way, way, way too soon. Spend time finding your pocket, which should be right around the crease in your hip. You extend aggressively from there, nowhere else.
You don't finish the second pull and try to rush under the bar. Be patient. Extend as high as you can.
Your feet in the catch are wide and splayed unevenly. If you were to try to catch like that in a full squat you would lose the lift and probably pull something in the process. Your powers, especially for a newbie, shouldn't be much different than your full lifts, other than the catch above parallel. Drill your foot transition. No weight, just practice moving from extension to catch.
You receive the bar with your shoulders and upper back loose. The weight will really crush you with anything heavier. Fixation is critical. Work on it.
You catch the bar way behind. That looked painful. Was it painful?
>>
>>37013391
Who said squatting often and doing the lifts were mutually exclusive?
You can happily squat 3 or 4 times a week and still get loads of volume in with the full lifts and variations, and still have room for accessories if you want.
Obviously in general your main focus should be the lifts as that's what weightlifting is but you dont get good at them if you dont have good squat numbers. And you can reach those numbers far faster squatting 3/4 times per week than you can once or twice.
Squatting isnt that hard.
>>
>>37013328

>>
>>37013650
The worse part is the bar was thick as fuck I don't even have small hands but I couldn't hookgrip it properly and it rested on my traps weird
>>
>>37013509

Thanks man. This looks like very good advice.

Nope, not painful at all. In fact, the entire movement felt very smooth, albeit somewhat weak. I also understand completely what you mean about exploding too soon, it's very clear now that you mention it - I had the same problem in the clean but it was somehow easier to fix, there.

A full squat is not possible for the moment because of the injury - you can't really tell in the video but I have a brace on my left ankle - but I see what you mean.

I'll try your advice tomorrow, thanks a lot!
>>
>>37013317

His small jump back isn't really the main problem.

>>37012716

I don't know what's up with your ankle but proper weightlifting shoes will put it in a better position either way. The other comment covered it well, you need to have a proper starting position, and work on extending more, especially since you're doing a power variation.

Nevermind, doesn't really matter.

So, you basically just did a set of 'breathing' squats, which is where you take your 10RM which should be ~75% of your max. Obviously if you can do the weight for 20 reps it's not a real 10 rep max, but really anything under, like, the 2-3RM range isn't going to be very accurate, and you're going to be able to push more given the right conditions. This is more exaggerated the lower the weight. Anyway, you were able to bang out 25 at 240, but you were fucking smoked afterward. This suggests that 240 is closer to your 12 or 13 'RM', which should be around 68% of your max. (240/.68) is about 352, which is probably possible for you if you really went for it like a true one rep max--which I don't recommend.
>>
>>37017428
>which is where you take your 10RM which should be ~75% of your max

lots of (possibly even most) powerlifters squat once or twice a week, and they prioritise squat progression
>>
>>37019039

Powerlifters are also dealing with a very different form of squatting (especially with those who popularised the twice a week approach) and a different overall gameplan.

They also don't prioritise squat progression in quite the same way as some oly lifters do. Its an event, yes, unlike for oly lifters but powerlifters also have to deal with the deadlift being a comp lift which oly lifters don't really have an equivalent to.
>>
>>37019083
im p sure all the sn/cj/pull volume we do gives fatigue roughtly similar to a powerlifter deadlifting once a week or so
>>
>>37019223

To light pulling? probably, might even be slanted in favour of the oly volume.

To (near) max pulling? probably not. That's the kind of lift that can fuck with your workouts for the next two weeks.
>>
>>37019244
from what I've seen powerlifters wont be pulling maximimal deadlifts too often

There's something of a difference between a max effort clean or snatch pull and a max effort deadlift. Both are rough on the body but the deadlift favours grinding so much more than it tends to beat you up to a much greater extent.

Rest the bar lower or higher?

>>37022150

Are you sure you're actually throwing it forwards? From your pic it looks like you might be confusing forward movement with the hook the bar does at the end or the path.

If you actually have issues with the bar path, try not to actively shrug the bar, and practise technique with drop snatches, focusing a lot on elbow position (pic) and footwork.

Also, post vid if you can.

Shouldn't we just not try to do either, just learn how to pull properly and allow it to naturally be a slide or jump?

In training the jump it's already assumed you know not to bunny hop prior to extension, which is what all that cuing 'not to jump' is meant to correct.

Again, a jump and catch *with extension* is perfectly sound technique, and actually preferable for a lot of lifters. It's particularly common among light lifters, and you also see it in heavier lifters like Torokhtiy when lifting lighter weights. 'Jumping' without extension, however, is bad, and is common among beginners and those with poor proprioception.

First thing: find your power position.

Next thing: set blocks to knees.

Next next thing: pull from blocks at knees to power position.

Ta-da.

So you just told him to pull from the knees to power position but you added blocks in there without telling him cues or what to think about. He already said he's having problems doing that, adding blocks don't magically make it go away

Lmao fucking idiots in here I swear

Define what type of help you need, exactly.
If it's just form, watch the videos again. Klokov goes on detail on how to set up from the knees to the extension.

I guess it was my bad assuming he wasn't a moran with no sense of his own body.

He also complained of 'making things overly complicated', but I can see how you could miss that chomping at the bit to tear someone else down.

Anyway. >>37025231 Hey bud. Be sure that when you set up from the blocks you are in the position you would be as if you were pulling from the floor. Your legs should be taut, your arms loose, your shoulders and lats keeping the bar in proximity to your mid-line. As you move upward toward the power point, the angle of your hip should be opening more than anything else, and by the time your actually reach the power position your torso should be almost vertical, your feet FLAT on the ground, with your shoulders still 'over' the bar. Focus on balance and consistency. If you feel yourself being pulled forward stop, reset, and focus on keeping the bar in proximity.

Why are you cutting? Are you significantly overweight, or do you just want to 'look good' for summer? If the latter, fuck that vain bullshit. Focus on gittin gud. Aesthetics will follow.

In the proper order of things you should actually be gaining weight and going up weight-classes as you progress until you just can't put any more weight on. This process takes years, of course, but the trend should always be gentlen incline toward plateau, rather than peak-and-valley. This isn't wrestling.

Now, assuming you actually are overweight considering your progress as an athlete, rather than cutting down to where you 'should' be, a more economical option would be to 'recompose' your body--replace the fat in your body with muscle. To do this you just eat at maintenance throughout your training. No spiking. No periodic fasting. No gimmicky faggotry. Just eat what you should and workout. Your body will reorganize its resource allocation according to the needs you're signalling to it, which is basically: hey, take all this stored energy and make it usable for the activity I'm engaged in.
