How do I get started with skipping /fit/?

Back when I used to box I could just never get the hang of it and couldn't do it very fast or for very long. Is there a knack to it I'm missing?

Plus, if I'm going to get one, what sort should I get? Leather? Rope? Plastic?

You gotta have rythym. Start slow and find your pace.

Listen to music that has good rythym before you start.

Thanks nigs.

My gut feeling is that the heavier the rope the better. Probably going to go for a leather one with wooden handles.

Don't get leather. If you're just getting started its likely you'll mess up from time to time, nothing wrong with that. But don't get a jump rope that turns into a whip when you miss a skip

Learn the proper form. Knees slightly bent, landing on the balls of your feet, etc.

I think the biggest mistake people make is jumping too high. You don't need to jump more than a few inches. As a matter of fact, it should look like you're not even jumping. Just barely enough to get over the rope.

You don't need a "heavy" rope. Just buy a basic cheap speed rope. Make sure it's the right length too.

Like others have mentioned, it helps to find a rhythm. Personally, I always count 1 and 2 repeatedly and eventually you'll have a good rhythm. Once you go faster, you'll learn to develop the rhythm based off of where the rope is and the tap the rope makes when it hits the floor.

Honestly, there's not any magical secret. It's just a matter of practice.
