I use it when cutting. I shoot for 120-150 g of protein and its nice to get 30-40g of protein in a ~300 calorie shake in the morning to make the rest of the day easier.

That being said it's a supplement. It's for people who don't get protein. If you eat 1 gram of protein for every two pounds u weight you should be fine. But the more the merrier.
