The rope keeps getting caught on the bottom of my shoe for some reason, just tried it bare foot and I can do it no problem but I have to live in fear of getting my toes whipped, wtf.

What's the point of jumping rope when you can do some other cardio?

Try this routine for jump-rope:
50 reps jump with both feet
25 reps right-left (right-left counts as 1 rep)
25 reps just on right foot
25 reps just on left foot
5 reps double jump (jump once, swing the rope 2 times)

Repeat this 5 times for starters, and increase the number number of repeats as you progress.
I guarantee you after the first day of doing this, your calves will be on fire for 5 days. The individual jumping on just 1 foot and the double jumps kills it.
