my brother told me about "the movement," a workout routine thats entirely based around functional strength using household objects (i.e. deadlifting your couch, overhead pressing your dresser, curling milk jugs, etc.)

You guys think this would work as a home workout? too poor for the gym atm.

I use an improvised home workout like this. I lift one end of my bed - if I want extra weight I set something heavy on it.

I alter the angle of my back depending on whether I want to half-squat it or deadlift.

bodyweight is usually calisthenics, and I understand if you're able to do a handstand push-up you'll have a muscular upper-body but unless you want the skill it seems like an inefficient method of adding muscle.

I'm sure sprinting alone builds some mass on your legs but I've never seen it recommended for that even by calisthenics advocates (and one of the regular criticisms is there's no effective leg training).

I think it's simply too obvious. Noone recommends sprinting when you ask about bodyweight training because it comes with that mental image of someone doing very static, slow exercise.

At the end of the day if you're subjecting a muscle to a lot of resistance it has to grow. Even if you train for endurance it still grows a little, not optimally but it does grow. There are some muscles that actually grow more from higher reps, like calves. Biking isn't what you would associate with body building and yet it builds huge calves and I'm 90% certain I heard Arnold talk about biking to build legs back in the day.

/fit/ has an absurdly warped perspective because of all the pen and paper RPG nerds eating up "study" after "study" about the most effective ways to build muscle. Nevermind that most of these studies are pseudo-science directly tied to fitness companies. Nevermind that "X builds the most muscle on untrained individuals over the first two months of training" does NOT equal "X is the best method to reach your natty limit". Besides, a beginner program shouldn't even target maximum growth, it should be all about developing proper form (in anything, not just lifting) and correcting posture problems while you're at it. So not only are these "how do you gain muscle as a total beginner" studies not helpful past beginner stage, their results aren't even helpful for beginners because beginners shouldn't prioritize muscle growth at all. I could go on and on about this shit.

Basically, lifting is a meme method. Not that there is anything wrong with lifting. But you can build muscle doing any combination of sports or your own made up "dead-lifting my couch" training program. Put all your muscle groups through the kind of stress they respond well to in a frequency you respond well to, eat enough (no crazy bulk and cut extremism), sleep well and gains will happen. When someone tells you one method is the best they usually earn money with that method.
