I get the impression a lot of people do powerlifting because they can't be good at weightlifting.

But, for me, powerlifting is the first one I did. And after getting a decent squat, naturally my weightlifting friends tried to get me to do cleans. But it's just so, so boring.

I'm more interested in watching powerlifting too. I just really like the sport. I don't know how people manage to spend hours training for it if they don't.

bench 3x/week. total volume is a big fucking deal for bench; sets of eight on volume day and a top set of 5 with a couple of backoffs on intensity day took me from like 235x5-260x5. Maybe a density block of light OHP for shoulder health on Saturday (assuming M/W/F) and try to bench on a decent (wide, firm, comp-spec) bench.

A lot of beginners/intermediates stall on bench, then realize that they can't do more than 2-3 bodyweight pullups.

Training your synergists and building more upper body muscle aids the bench press. Also, it's been posted to death that strong lats aid in the bottom of the press.

Not off hand.

Most freak benchers are just built to bench. Insertions can be very make or break in the bench.

For the average lifter, a lot of it comes down to development. Squats and deadlifts develop the lower musculature well, but sometimes bench work only won't do it. This is why OHP is advocated. Also, flyes, dips, heavy rowing, etc. can help "bring up" a mediocre bencher.
