Blah thoughts. Not sure whether to post on /fa/, /mu/, /g/, /gd/, or even 4chan in general. Fuggit let's try /fa/ first

Seems like culture's on the verge of something else. Not sure what. Cyberpunk is mad cool right now, and it seems like the younger kids are slogging through it. But it's not quite the mirror-shades/trenchcoat stuff of the 80s and 90s. We got done with dubstep's death a while ago. All the cool arty kids I know are into glitch-art and Witch House right now, with some curiosity for the palewave/Vaporwave side. There's some heavy thinking going on about identity, the internet, tech, and our place in things. I see kids half my age talking about Lain like it came out yesterday-- and they aren't the neckbeards of their generation. We've got driverless cars gonna crash one of the largest employment sectors (trucking) and general-use robot arms gonna crash the other (service & hospitality). Crypto currencies are real. People are talking about what happens when millions of people become unemployable through no fault of their own; how socialism actually makes sense in a post-scarcity economy. How coding needs to become a 2nd major Literacy. High-power flat computer-phones in EVERY pocket.

Feels like there's some movement coming gonna combine all this shit. Like, as big as the hippie movement was in the 50s/60s, to redefine EVERYTHING again. Some people are talking about a Fourth Turning ala Strauss-Howe theory... idk, just a big apprehension.
Help flesh this out. Where's it going? What's next level? What niche, cultish sub-sub-splinter-genres/websites/media capture tomorrow's zeitgeist? What's bleeding edge like RIGHT this second? HY hair is done for, manbun has its days numbered. Superflat/minimal design is getting worn out--vintage/hipster/handmade look too. Lunarcore was a quick. All the major websites are giving way to segmented social media apps, that are already losing ground by getting mentioned on local news all the goddamned time.
Fuck, man.

Music and fashion largely go hand in hand.
Thing is, Vaporwave, Witch House etc are not big enough to influence mainstream fashion/media in the same way that rock'n'roll and similar genres did. Undercover and Supreme still produce clothing with musicians of the previous century, such as the 'SHE BRINGS THE RAIN' jacket and the Neil Young tshirt.

SLP has been fairly synonymous with alot of rock'n'roll musicians. You can even see the influence of the use of biker jeans on modern 'musicians' such as Kanye West.

I don't think glitch art or similar is going to ever take off in mainstream society, to the point where it's displayed in art galleries. Maybe at a hipster gathering or college display, but not as a big thing.

This is really a question for /mu/. I'm surprised most kids have heard of Lain.

See, that's the thing: Not just Tumblr. Not just vaporwave or VHS tapes or any of that trite bullshit. More vague, extrapolated from the current sensibilities. You might not see CVL† SH‡† as some movie soundtrack, or see retired glitched anime .gifs on gallery walls right next to Rauschenberg or Koons... but it kinda filters into other things. There's an awareness (especially in Horror movies lately) that zalgo text and "misbehaving" digital media is creepy and kinda cool. Watching some Black Mirror (especially Ep 3 "The Entire History of You") and I was stunned how things like USEFUL wearable tech could change life in ways we're so not prepared for.

Just can't shake the feeling all these disparate bits are leading up to something. Some visual or musical or media style that ties it all together with the philosophy of open source, transparency and anti-establishment. Even the idea of code as being something ANYONE has access to and could theoretically do, for little or no startup. A highly motivated, highly skilled youth group could accomplish things the hippie or punk waves never dreamed of.

Or maybe I'm just off my rocker.

I love you, OP. And I love the concept that everything - memes, apps, fads, genres - will begin and end before people even realise they exist, leading to some crazy fragmentation that's more like a tumultuous churn of ideas than a wave of popularity.
>>
>>9669156
Also, regarding glitch, I wonder how much of it is a countermovement against these perfect infallible wonder-machines we have. We feel entitled to things working perfectly and looking unreal; god forbid a screen be low-res enough to see a single errant pixel.

Analogue and early graphics were messy, error-prone and dirty. They were difficult to use, ran hot, and broke often. Now we just have perfect, padded white rooms/rectangles with no distinguishing features and no user-serviceable parts.

>how socialism actually makes sense in a post-scarcity economy. How coding needs to become a 2nd major Literacy

I more or less agree. Code which writes itself is quickly becoming the norm. It needs another decade of being "dumbed down" before we should force elementary schools to train our children to be tech literate. We won't get much closer to post scarcity until the boomers die. It will be interesting to see how our organizational structures adapt to this model.

Something is starting already. I went to my parents house the other day and my dad was watching CNN about some tranny shit or whatever and he said, "Has science gone too far? Its moving too fast these days." He barely knows Microsoft Office. They know they're on the way out. Sometimes, when I'm not working, I take kids from my old highschool to Georgia Tech and show them around. Its easy as fuck to make a startup these days. Boomers are throwing money at it like its nothing. We are approaching something but, idk what. In all honesty I think its going to be a societal split, between those who want to progress and "luddites" who really want to stay in the one place. There is a narrative that we've gone a bit far in a few places, even kids think so.

The Entire History Of You is great. You should read The Shallows (and The Glass Cage) by Nicholas Carr. It's really eye-opening. The way technology is evolving is pretty fucking scary, everybody my age in scandinavia is glued to their phone, and a big part of the youth is getting more and more angsty and introverted, and are developing mental disorders. The internet is changing how our brains work, not so much in the good way.. actually, and people are living their lives unaware.

I'm also really fucking tired of social media and facebook. I used to love technology but now I hardly ever use all these things. I think (with uncontrolled use) they make people shallow. And I hate the "hoarding of friends" about facebook. I can't wait until facebook dies, if it ever will. It might sound a little "crazy", but I'm distancing myself from - and I have a really controlled use of technology - and I take every opportunity I can to hang out with my friends and in nature with my friends, I appreciate the nature a lot more. And It's kinda weird, when I go out in the forest or in the nature and things like "it's really beautiful out here - it looks like skyrim (or any other video game)" pop into my head, that suggests I'm more used to what's artificial than to what's real and natural.

I just saw on the news today, from a survey/study done in Denmark that kids in the kindergarten prefer to stay on their ipads rather than playing with their friends. And here in Norway, there was a primary school that gave ipads to all the kids, like 300 kids from 8-12 years old.

The internet is wrecking our attention and focus, more and more kids are developing ADD - a disorder that hardly existed back in the day. Another (creepy) study suggests that people overevaluate their intelligence and knowledge, because of the use of google/internet. Also, if anyone likes to read about technology/the internet and how it's affecting people check out Nicholas Carr blog; http://www.roughtype.com.

on easter i was with a bunch of family and i was so weirded out by how everyone was glued to their phones

i wanted my little cousins to come outside and play with me, they wanted to play on the computer and their ipads. "it's too hot" they all said

and all the older (35-50) family members were sat in one of the bedrooms on their phones playing whatever dumb games they play, not socializing

at 18, i should be the one who stays inside secluded in a room staring at a screen while my family is outside interacting
instead, the adults forgot how to socialize and the kids somehow would rather play a game about going outside than go outside

at least i fit in with the old people

Me again. Not to sound too negative and doomsday-like; People are becoming more aware of how technology is taking over our lives, and how much we're fucking with the environment and climate. How much chemicals and shit that is in our food and in our shampoos and hair sprays. And I kinda feel that a lot of people will go in a more green anarchist way of life, which I personally think is a good thing. Some people (actually a lot), are retreating back to nature again, consciously. Few people are taking the lead, but I think people will follow, maybe in a more subculture kind of way, though. The future will show.

Minimalist-movements have also been evolving for some time now, with a critique against the materialism of the world. People have so much shit that takes up space and creates clutter, physically and mentally. And the focus on meditation, yoga and mindfullness is also quite interesting - it's more necessary than ever to stay sane in this globalized wired world of clutter.

There's so much shit music today than ever before as well, but at the same time there has never been so many genres and so much exquisite and evolved music as in this second. The biggest main genre is now electronic music - and about everybody is creating their music on a laptop/software program nowadays, or at least involve some kind of electronic synthesized sounds, if they're not pure electronic.

I think there will be a huge gap between those who will use technology consciously and those who can't. The world is just getting more and more digitalized in much faster pace than before, so we need to learn how to handle it.

I also love this guy's speech, in the "15 million merits" episode of Black Mirror, if you've watched it. It really is relevant, already today.

I think you might be onto something, I've also noticed that what was a niche interest to me shared only by a few people on the internet has become a thing that my more ordinary friends appear to be getting into and I think it runs deeper than being a massmedia trend and lends itself more to a suggestion of actual thoughts about where technology is taking us.
This has been brewing for sometime and it's only becoming more popular.

I think the attraction to analogue stems from the fact that my generation was probably the final one to have a meaningful interaction with such technology before the internet became so pervasive and, while there's no doubt we were moulded by it, we still retain attachments and can recall a time before it and take stock of what we've gained through technology and what we've lost as a result.

As to where this is heading I've absolutely no idea, the fact you point out witch house despite it already being dead both suggests that new movements are unsustainable and can grow and die so quickly in the internet age however the underlying sort of anarchic, quirky feel of it continuing in various forms points to something deeper.
It needs some kind of binder to bring it all together.

TL;DR
I agree with you, that probably makes me a mental too.

See, the trouble's gonna come when there's no work left to do.

All the driving jobs will get automated.
Service jobs? Electronic, computerized, and self-serve.
Maintenance/Work? General-use robot arms + Learning algorithms.

So everyone worth their salt is majoring CS, or engineering. But even the talent pool for those are quickly exceeding the demand. Look at the demographic and enrollment numbers-- soon enough you'll have the same situation as Law and Medicine, where a few highly-experienced older professionals make bank and refuse to retire, while younger hopefuls are a dime a dozen, and can't get a job (or if they can, it's low pay, low opportunity for advancement, no benefits wage-slavery).

What do you do with all the People?
Youth unemployment + Societal strife + Highly intelligent, skilled and motivated kids = Bad News for any establishment. Now imagine most of those kids speak C and Python as easily as English, and you've got a hell of a situation.

It might not be this generation. It might not be next. But there's a storm a-brewin'.

>Now imagine most of those kids speak C and Python as easily as English

There's the flaw in your logic. Kids aren't highly intelligent nor motivated. Every one of my friends that's into coding and/or tech wants one of the following two things:
>Lots of extralegal benefits at their IT job.
>Become a(n indie) gamedeveloper.

Nobody wants to overthrow society, start a revolution or what not. Everybody's comfortable the way they are, especially when all new tech is aimed at increasing pleasure (for example Virtual Reality or the selfdriving vehicles).

Nobody wants it to change as long as they're comfortable. I don't want to sound neckbeard-ish or a doomdaysprophet but it's Brave New World from the get go and not 1984.
>>

>That being said, the US is almost 250 years old. And thats when things get hairy for world powers, so...

No need to think so americentric. The US' power could/will crumble but their will be a new power ready to take over. India and China are massively on the rise both in economics as well as in education.

The world doesn't end with the US, that's selfish thinking.

I feel like the fear is a little unwarranted. Sure technology is becoming rampant yet it's going to take years maybe decades to kill the ignorant majority that makes up the "manpower" or "techskill" (ie:trucking, services, etc) jobs that are quickly becoming automated by the tech industry.
And unfortunately the youth are going to be inspired by pop-culture much quicker than counter-culture. Even if some tech culture leaks into the mainstream, (coding, engi, etc.) the uninspired youth have no reason to pursue it yet. That being said, I have noticed an increase in women, better looking men, and less socially retarded students in the tech and coding classes at my uni. Whether this is a foreboding look at the "hippie movement" or a preemptive strike by the the upper echelon to further control the lucrative business of technology, only time will tell.
Though honestly, I'd love to see a tech based counter-culture movement headed by inspired teens like asspizza, mike the ruler, etc. but with intelligent teenagers.

Well, technology is already an inseparatable factor from society and the ways we interact with it are expanding every day.
The main thing that changed I think, is the transparency and link everyone has to it. See how many of us are part of a crowd and have little to no awareness of it.
What conspiracy theorists foretold about television and musics influence in the 50s and 60s can be related to almost every form of media nowadays.
Consumation and awareness of all forms of media have also rised in various ways and even niche genres or sub-cultures can dramatically influence mainstream and the oppinion of the masses.
One thing I'm sure about is whenevers theres a progressive movement, theres gonna be a form of anti-movement.

Define "bloodless".
In terms of actual physical bloodspill, it will be relatively painless. Yes. In terms of emotional/social suffering, there will be "blood". At least for the US.

Both the mental strife of losing it's position of political prominence but also in losing it's position of wealth and economic dominance. The flipside of that coin lies in the vast gains former third world countries will make in their rise.

Consider this. Many historians and political thinkers view the Ukraine crisis as the last conflict of the 20th century. The world is ready for a 21st century where physicial violent conflict is abolished and a thing of the past.

People always view a shift in power/importance as some cataclysmic event where people's lives are lost.

Let me say that again.
There will be no revolution.
THere will be no massacres.

Everything will pan out and yes, things will shift. But it will be a different kind of shift. There's is no new French Revolution on the horizon.

You just bought into religious apocalyps-thinking.

It won't be long before this generation takes the reigns, and the more I look around the more I see this generation embracing either extreme tumblrite or /pol/ack viewpoints. Everyone my age seems to be turning into a far-right libertarian or a privilege-checking leftist. The internet seems to be less and less a separate sphere from the real world, and with that comes an erosion of the freedom which the web provides. People are getting arrested for fucking with stuff on the internet and people are killing themselves over what people say to them online. Meanwhile, movements like ISIS gain traction largely through their use of social media. In the face of all that, styles like the vaporwave aesthetic, neat as they are, don't even come close to a major influential social movement.

I am, however, very interested in the aesthetic and would like to know where I can find low-poly early-style 3D models and animations of said models, TV footage from the 80s and 90s (especially with "VHS" effects visible, especially from japan and korea), etc. en masse.

exactly. In London and Bristol dubstep is almost certainly not dead, but I'm sort of glad people think it is because the nights have an underground kind of communal theme that makes you feel like youre part of something which is quite special in a 'dying culture'

That's a remnant of the old way of thinking. An oppressive police force vs unhappy people is an escalation of violence. People will realize that nonviolence is the way to go.

we don't have groundbreaking literature because people are getting cut free from base social code.
Western society has developed a code shorthand for ideas based on (mostly) judeo-christian iconography and previous literary works. The whole "atheist revolt" as well as pop culture being a base rather than classics. has left the last generation and a half with only a vague idea of some sorts of symbolism without fully understanding it. Even if the bible was read as a "symbolic text" in an analytical way devoid of religion would give people the symbols.
an example:
Look at the last 10 seconds of Ben Hur and try to look at it as someone with no background in religion would see it.

As an Anarcho-primitivist, I appreciate these posts immensely. Nice to see some sanity in the world.

Check out John Zerzans podcast. He's a bit radical and borderline senile at times but he makes some good points. All the callers are also nuts but he has good guests.

sub-cultures suck. modern sub-cultures suck worse because they have no ideology. they are generally populated by people posturing at skill and rife with insecurity.

all that said, these things are cyclical and sensationalized in hindsight.

it's a lot like in japan. The culture is so homogenous that there's almost no social connotation to dressing "punk" or "gangster", which is why so many jap youths try to dress like yakuza without actually being tough or rebellious. Their society is so conformist that its assumed you wouldnt ever want to rebel. Like
Newspeak, it's erasing rebelliousness as a a concept so people cant even conceive of doing it.

Historians and "political thinkers" are always saying that there will be no more war in the future, they say that because they believe the consequences of war are too great, and the alternative isn't so bad.
It was said about guns, and then machine guns, then cannons, then fighter planes and it keeps going on.

Entitled white people having a hissy fit/riot and destroying some property will not overthrow society nor will it end in massive bloodshed. Sure, will keep seeing some skirmishes between hooligans and police. But nothing more will come off it. Don't expect this to be V for Vendetta.

Most white people see protesting as a day off, to drink beer from dawn till dusk. If it rains, they'll stay home. Even if it comes to violence, it'll keep to turning over some cars owned by innocent bystanders. It'll never come to an actual overthrow of "The System".

Pic related, the most recent "Huge Union protests" Belgium saw in light of the government announcing massive budget cuts.

And we're the living proof. Here we are discussing things on an anonymous anime board. We're not meeting in secret cafés planning the overthrowal of everything that keeps us down. No, we're typing shit up on the internet.

Exactly my point.
>>
>>9678100
>>9678106
I think you're really underestimating how quickly we can turn violent
I agree that butthurt uni students and Russel Brand fans aren't going to be the ones doing it though
>>
>>9678127

I really can't see it evolving into something beyond a soccer/baseball riot. You're talking about privileged people that (despite minor nuisances) have it pretty good (especially compared to minorities). As long as people are comfortable with the roof over their head, the food on the table and the shows on tv. Nobody'll go beyond turning a car over.

And yes, that's turning violent. But it's random violence directed at innocent bystanders, not "The Man". So, it"ll change nothing. And remember, the police are still on top of their game despite what protestors in Ferguson might say. As long as the police has control, the status quo will remain.

Even more so. The occasional "national protest" or "sports riot" vents people's feelings. Those are allowed in a way, as long as they don't damage industrial or political property.

Like I said, nothing will come from privileged white people rioting. And don't get me wrong, I'm white myself. I just don't see white people getting genuinely upset when they're in a position of power and privilege (no matte how middle class they are).

did you just entirely forget about Anders Breivik?
people care about more than their material situation

also Western Muslims travelling to Syria to fight for ISIS
they're not white (mostly) but they're still living comfortable lives and they give it all up on a whim
>>
>>9678192
>>9678203

Both your examples are beyond compare to average lower/middle class white people. Western Muslims (second/third generation immigrants) have been discriminated against on a systematic and regular basis. They found an identity in Radicalised Islam and that identity calls them to fight in Syria, that's a whole different ball game. White Western Muslims preach the peaceful side of Islam and don't fight at all, the percentage that actually goes to fight is negligible.

Anders Breivik is an exception and he killed because he's a delusional psycho. In the end, all he cared for was himself. I sincerely hope you can see that. He wasn't fighting for a better world, he did it for attention for him and his "manuscript". Everything, from the preparation, to the killing, to the court sessions, was an act.

You can not compare those two to "union actions" or anything "regular people" would do because they're agitated.

My point still stands. Average, lower/middle class people will not come in uprise as long as their's cheap junkfood, mindnumbing television programming and a roof over their heads.

>White Western Muslims preach the peaceful side of Islam and don't fight at all, the percentage that actually goes to fight is negligible.
keep telling yourself this while ignoring the fact that Western Muslims are joining ISIS at higher rates than other Muslims
