I have a ring similar to this, 14k with three diamonds. It's worth about 1,500 USD. I want to get it modified, but I'm afraid they'll fuck up the gold, and this ring means a lot to me.

that's really cool. could you just wear it on your thumb? i wouldn't trust something like that to commercial jewelers. if you do decide to get it modified, my advice would be to find an independent old school jeweler. some near-centenarian from old country

A thin band? Like, a strip connected at each end, or one continuous piece?

If you're diy-oriented, you can pick up strips of leather and thick brass to fasten them together with from your local craft and hobby store. If not, sorry, I wouldn't know where one would be.
