How many layers do you guys wear when it's like -20ºC (-4F for amerifats)?
I can't wear less than 3 layers of shirts/sweaters/jackets, one thick pair of pants (sometimes two pairs, one thin pijama) and two socks (or one thick pair) with a leather sneaker.
Do I wear too much? I've been thinking of droppning the underpants because they're not always necessary and not exactly comfy when I wear skinny shit (90% of the time).

for cold weather:
-baselayer, preferably a thin clingy poly materiel for breathability
-insulation
anything from a thick cotton t-shirt to a wool sweater + down puffer depending on your climitization, bf%, warmness sweetspot whatever.
-shell layer
very crucial, as soon as a slight breeze starts blowing you lose massive body heat if you arent weatherproof. what you want is a cocoon of warm dry air between you and your shell, with minimum heat transfer between the shell and outside air. this means it will not be very breathable so get something easy to open with underarm vents and the like.
bottom half is much the same thing but less important. i just wear TNF summit leggings and whatever pants.
make sure your extremities are plugged for drafts as well, so thick (wool) socks. outdoor specialty stores are great, so are blue collar workwear places. have some sort of hand covering or stuff your pockets and make sure you have a tight fitting cuff as not to leak heat out of your sleeves.
a warm hat that covers your ears and a hood that extends your warmth cocoon upwards is also nice.
for shoes leather works but unless its insulated will conduct heat pretty easily, just avoid woven materials like cotton.
its not a question of how many layers but how those layers work together. functionally and as a cohesive aesthetically pleasing fit.
hope this helped =]
