Is it ever possible to wear a hat that's not a baseball cap/beanie and be /fa/?
...and I mean going about life, not just photoshoots.

bucket hats and visors can be tolerable sometimes
if you're talking wide brimmed hats, you have to be 50+

I had some idea to try to wear a german fraternity style student cap, but I can't quite envision how to wear it right.
Would it have potential?

depends on the rest of the fit i guess
i could definitely see it working

Yes. Just wear one, and don't worry about what others think. It may be natural to worry somewhat, when starting out, but it will fall in place to feel more natural, before long. Try to get a hat that goes with whatever else you typically wear, though. If you want something more formal, you could try a homburg, bowler/derby, or even a fedora or trilby, but make sure that they are fur felt, or if intended to be used during summer and heat, a decent straw.

I saw a dude with a burgandy beret, looked pretty badass in a Che Guevara way.
