>take a Fruit of the Loom sweater
>screenprint VETEMENTS on it
>take an adidias track suit
>stick an embroidered patch with your name in Russian on it
>it's now high fashion and worth $750
Can anyone explain this aspect of fashion to me?

People will pay for it
Adidas tracksuits used to cost as much as a tuxedo in Russia, and was a genuine symbol of status
People looking for "inspiration" saw the tracksuit combos, didn't look into it and decided to make a $40 costume into an $800 costume just because

Humans have a common desire to 'belong' to a certain social group which is more successful than other groups. Better looking, healthier, wealthier, stronger etc. etc.
Fashion works through viral marketing to induce a certain image to their demographic that their brand is a display of such a successful group. It can be a simple letter print, a shape, a patch, a color combination, a stitching... it can be literally ANYTHING, as long as you manage to implant this image in the heads of the demographic and make them want to belong to the perceived exclusivity of this group. This is how 'fashion' generally works.
Simple example: Famous singer gets paid by brand X to wear a jacket in his new music video > demographic sees the video > wants to mimic him and buys the jacket > people who are unfamiliar with the singer see a lot of their peers wear the jacket outside > they are driven to buy it too > complete strangers to the singer, his fans and their peers realize that suddenly everyone is wearing this certain jacket > they go and buy it too = Mission accomplished.

>vetements printing their logo on a normal cut sweater
Kek nice b8

You'd have to buy the sweater massively oversized and then stretch the sleeves as much as you can before screenprinting VETEMENTS on it for the full effect.

oh shit, tobasko sweet browses /fa/

An actual response. It's because the brand proves that it's expensive and its essentially the same thing as wearing a gold watch. Its just a sign of wealth.
