The Beatles took it from their art student friends in Germany, and then proceeded to popularize it for the rest of the world.
It probably wouldn't work well today. You'd have to style your entire wardrobe around it to not look like some greasy teenager that spends too much time at his local guitar center.

I think the contrary. If you look at the last shadow puppets they pulled this off less than a decade ago... I think the slim English tailored suit is timeless.
