It's mainly cause of the model, the right one looks like a vanilla twink. And everything about the shorts and shoes look to prim and proper. Left at least has some texture to work with making it more masculine looking.

They should throw a belt on the left, cut the shorts a little higher over the knee, and take away the cargo pockets. The stitching is great as is cause it adds more texture, making it seem more rugged.

Cargo shorts are definitely bad, but the picture on the right is also bad. Men's shorts are trending toward really short which for most men looks pretty ridiculous. Basically, if you don't have bronze adonis Zyzz legs, you should not be wearing your shorts too much above the knee.

I personally think the shorts in this picture are in general the best fit and length for most guys.
